I was nervous about self-installing the HDMI upgrade board to my XMC-1 but it looked pretty straight forward. Now, it looks like I screwed up. I need some help, please. I downloaded the "special installer HDMI update" to a new USB stick and inserted to do the update as Keith has instructed in one of his threads. I di d not use the Version 5.3 which came with the board because of what I read on the Forum. Everything looked like it was updating correctly, then I got err int hdsb82. Nothing works now except the power button. I then realized that I did not have the unit in low power standby mode when I was uploading. Is that what screwed things up ? I am so frustrated right now. Help.

It's doubtful that any error on your part caused a significant problem.... although problems do sometimes occur during the upgrade....
You didn't actually say whether you installed the new board or not.... if not, then you should power down your XMC-1, INSTALL THE NEW HDMI BOARD, and see if it powers up OK.
If it powers up OK with the new board, then you should probably immediately update it to the current version v5.4" and you should be OK.
If it doesn't power up OK, we have no way to know exactly what problem occurred...
--------------------
If you follow the procedure exactly, including switching your unit to Low Power Standby when you start, the new firmware will install and the XMC-1 will shut down. You will then install the new board and, when it powers back up, it should start normally.
If you leave the XMC-1 in High Power Standby by mistake, after you install the new firmware, the XMC-1 will power down and then reboot. It will then give you an error. However, if you then power it back down, and install the new HDMI board, it should then restart normally. So, other than the odd error, it usually ends up working OK this way.... If not,. then there's something else going on, and your XMC-1 may need to come in for service.
---------------------
The "Special Upgrade Version" of the firmware is special because it is specifically designed to install the NEW firmware while the original board is still physically in the unit. (Full versions won't do that because they check for which board is installed and will automatically NOT install the incorrect version.) Either the version on the forum or the version on the stick included with your upgrade kit should work fine.

Thanks , Keith I have not installed the board yet. I was updating software first. I will install the new board and try to power up as suggested. Once done, if it powers up. but I can not get to the set-up menu, I can not install the new software, correct ?

The error you’re receiving is the Xmc can’t find the board. You are at the point of no return now, you gotta go for it.

That is correct - the ONLY way for an end user to install the firmware is using the Setup Menu. (Here at the factory we have special adapters that allow us to install firmware on each board individually.)
If your XMC-1 won't boot up with the new board, there would be a very remote possibility that the update had failed. If so, the old firmware could still be there, and it might boot up if you put the old HDMI board back. However that's extremely unlikely.

Well I had the same issue. However, I am a 40 year veteran as an IT guy and swapping boards or work on computer equipment does not phase me. I followed the directions line by line. I did have my standby in the correct mode as per the directions. It went through all of it's processes but at the end it restarted and gave me the err code.
I did install the board and reboot the system. I plugged in my TV to HDMI2 and plugged in my BluSound Node to an analog input. That worked great. Then I hit menu to check the version and it would not send a signal to my TV. I called support and they had me load 5.8, but no luck. So frustrated I decided to plug in my 4k player into HDMI 5. Once I did that the tv came to life and the menu button worked. However, when I disconnect the HDMI 5 input, the menu stopped working. I think there is a firmware bug and it is a stupid feature.
PS I reset the firmware to factory, but no difference.
PPSS I do have a 4k tv as well

The upgrade process does just plain fail occasionally.... (We can't do a system test, of the new board in your particular unit, until it is installed in your particular unit, and sometimes something goes wrong.) We have also seen some cases where the on-screen display wouldn't work UNLESS there was a video signal present. The chip that generates the OSD is designed to show the menu over existing video - and occasionally it failes to properly create a blank background when there is NO video. (or it may work perfectly with one output and not the other...) The important question is whether, when there is a video input selected, you can consistently see the OSD, and everything else works properly. (So, does the OSD actually only work when you have something plugged into HDMI 5, or does it work whenever there is ANY input selected that has video on it?) The error you experienced after the update suggests that the update itself didn't finish properly.... and there's something else going on. Well I had the same issue. The simply answer is no. If I am on HDMI 8 watching a 4k device, and then change to HDMI 5, it seems to take a long time for everything to "sync" and watch. But when I go back to HDMI 8, I have to shut off the Emotiva and turn it back on. It seems like when the XMC boots, it has a lag in changes on the display, i.e., using the input button to change from different sources does nothing, and then all of a sudden it flashes all of the inputs and stops several sources down the path.
I have upgraded to 5.8 successfully, in other words when I loaded the firmware, it went thru the entire process as I would expect it would, no errors.
So I am not sure. I only use 2 HDMI sources, so I think I will move them to HDMI 1 and 2 just to see how it reacts.
