I had to send my DC-1 in to have display repaired. I was sent very precise instructions on shipping in the original boxes or else it would be sent back unrepaired. so I shipped the factory black DC-1 dac in its black box and that was packed away in the big brown emotiva shipping box.
I got it back in just the little black box and no shipping box which was a surprise to me. so apparently I paid much more to ship the half concelled item to them and they just sent it back to me with the entire world knowing inside is a sweet little piece of emo goodness.
really? this time of year is the worst and this joker was naked and afraid!!!

. Hey look at it this way , at least Emo didn't charge you $260 for a CD player box and $$1,100 for 2 speaker crates ,I just ordered over ,$2,000 in Mcintosh boxes I'll never sell the gear that matches the boxes & crates ,I feel robbed if I don't have factory packing for everything I own ,including 40 years old Dynaco boxes,I've still got the box to Emotivas 1st presmp ,the RSP-1 lol

Or just the black one you received after repair ? I’ve received some small things from Emotiva and they’ve always packed my items into another box or envelope. With that said, even the large double boxed amps and processors ship in boxes that are labeled with contents. This is what insurance is for. I’d be more choked about my gear getting broken or damaged in transit especially when coming back from repair.

I would call and ask to be shipped the proper box so I had it in case I wanted to sell the unit. Mark

I’d be more choked about my gear getting broken or damaged in transit especially when coming back from repair. THE DC-1 was sold to me and shipped in a brown box that said emotiva on it. I cant recall if it said "DC-1" on it. my point was they made it very clear they were not touching anything that wasnt sent in proper packing. the paperwork said "we are not responsible for improper packed items and we will refuse it if we receive it otherwise "
Since it appeared that the guy I bought it from shipped it to me the way he got it I just figured that was the way he got it also ..and the proper way to ship it. so that is how I shipped it.
what I got back was the unit in the black box it sits in when its new. im sure this was to save them shipping but hell it was worth it to me to make sure it was correctly packed so why didnt emo return it like that? now when I do sell it I will have to put it in a different 2nd box so its double boxed and safe.
shippers have a tendency to try to screw you on proper boxing / packing so yes I treat it as its important.

Guess I should’ve waited for your response before I wrote my other thoughts above. If the brown box was original packaging from Emotiva I agree with klinemj that you should contact Emotiva and request they send you the packing that was supposed to be required. I’d be upset as well.

gentlejax You have a valid case. Here's the reason. Emotiva really means it when they say they want it shipped in the original (brown) box. And they should return it in the original box as well. That's their standard service procedure. Because if you need warranty service, you will end up PAYING at least $25-40 for them to ship you the original box so you can ship it back to them. I know I had to, and I accept it because I had tossed the original box. So those boxes are worth money. So if it was an oversight they need to ship you replacement boxes for free. However, it's also possible the box got damaged on the way to Emotiva. That's the purpose of the box is to safely transport it and absorb impacts. If that's the case Emotiva would not be liable to return a damaged box. (Well there may be debate because they do require you to ship it in the box so it won't be damaged if they didn't require it but I'm not going to go there). But they need to have some documentation showing that the box was received damaged. I am suspecting that it was a mix up on their part. I would definitely call and I think they will take care of you. Don't email. Call.

It is really weird to me they gave me the impression they would be very strict on the packing..and then they send me the stealth DC-1 back to me in its black box with the label stuck on it...
I need to call just to verify that it would be an issue later for service. its not right they would not return the box. I did have packing around the DC-1 one box so its not like it was moving around it it. it was tight and secure.
so not sure the amount of damage possible. it was light and tight .

I'm telling you right now...call, tell them what happened, and tell them they need to send you the proper outer box line the one you sent in. Do it now while it is fresh. Don't bother to ask if it would be an issue down the road. They should have shipped it back in the proper packing...which includes a standard brown outer box with an inner box. That's how mine came and I am pretty sure it's how all others came when ordered new. I can still recall unwrapping mine, and the packing was certainly impressive and spoke to high quality overall. Emotiva should have shipped it in the original (brown external) box. Hopefully they'll make it right, and have a talk with whomever shipped it that way.
I have kept boxes for ages but also tossed some and will be tossing more... When you've been in the biz since the early 1970's and have accumulated a lot of stuff (seven complete systems before I gave away a couple to the boys, plus probably a dozen odds and ends like amplifiers, tape decks (RR and cassette), few pieces of older tube gear, etc. etc. etc.) it just isn't practical to keep all the boxes. Especially for speakers -- I have all of my F206 and Salon2 boxes at the moment (most recent speaker purchases), but they are freakin' huge, so I will probably keep a couple just in case and toss the rest. And just flattening them doesn't help much any more due to all the foam packaging. Then I have boxes for a half-dozen Emotiva components, all the old receivers and AVRs, seven (!) subs, several big TVs, etc. Thinking about the shed where most are stored, I have nearly 1000 cu ft filled with empty boxes. Figure shipping costs for the heavier stuff and I figure I'll just sell locally.

I can't speak to you being poor which I highly doubt ,however it's an absolute fact that high dollar gear that is without factory packing attracts way less buyers ,sells much slower ,worst off it sells for at least 20% less ,just tonight I sold 1 pair of my McIntosh XRT-22 line arrays because my gear is getting out of hand ,I got $5,500 out of the dual columns because I was able to palatize using factory boxes the original owner stashed away in 1993 ,Agon shows the last like model speaker selling for $1,800 less ,that's no small amount of bread ,I still have my box for Emotivas 1st preamp lol
