Hey all, just purchased some 16/3 power cable and going to pick up some of These for the IEC ends, not looking to make cables that are somehow going to improve the sound just a cable that is 15ft long and looks a bit better than standard IEC cables for my Airmotiv 6s speakers. Has anyone taken on making there own power cables this way ?? I would like to put some techflex on them but yikes it isn't cheap, especially 30ft of it, but I do understand it would look much better than plain black cable. Cheers, Chad The ends Techflex options I like Ogre Superhero

I've made my own as there wasn't a cheaper / shorter option at the time as I didn't want to pay for mega dollar boutique cables. It wasn't difficult to do and I got the covering from eBay rather cheap... I just can't remember the seller I purchased from.

I think that's the color I used for the speaker cable between my subwoofers and Crown amps.

I make my own power cables as well as many other cables. For power cables I always use Marinco hospital grade plugs and Marinco IEC's. I normally use Belden shielded wire for power cables. Techflex I use several types and colors my favorite is plain black "Clean Cut" style Techflex. You can get some good deals for Techflex on ebay but for a more exotic stuff and huge variety of colors and styles wirecare.com is the best place. If you need a heat gun for shrink tubing Harbor Freight has a great one that's very cheap it usually it goes on sale between $7 and $9 and it works very well, I think the current with sale coupon sale price is $8.99
I don't have any pics of my power cables but here are some pics of one of my Mogami wire speaker cables I made before the banana plugs were installed and also a picture of some of my 3.5mm IR cables.

Heat gun I have, multiple sizes and colors of shrink wrap I have, I do have some black techflex here right now but I don't think I have enough anyhow, also something with some color for these does interest me more haha. I'll check those links out but so far amazon.ca has the best deals for me, if I buy across the border from either amazon.com or ebay the exchange rate is making it more expensive for the same thing, the IEC ends I linked are $26 a pair on amazon.ca and $22 a pair on amazon.com so actually more expensive for me after exchange rate. I seen those Marinco ends whilst searching the web but more than I want to spend. Thanks for the links, Chad

16-3? 15'? I hope it is a low current device. IMO even a modest amp should have 14-3 for that run. Now? To shield or NOT? A shielded cable might buy you some noise reduction. Ground the shield ONLY at the end nearest the wall plug. Not at the equipment. Belden 19364 ticks all the boxes. You should be able to beat the price listed at this link: www.revolutionpower.com/belden-19364-14-awg-3-conductor-power-cableFind others in your situation and see about a 'group buy' where you can take advantage of 100' or perhaps longer, price breaks.

If you would have read the first post you would see they are for my Airmotiv 6s which should easily be sufficient. They won't need much for shielding and I have already purchased wire, just need ends and Techflex.

What is the amp power in the '6? The 8 has 2x200 per speaker..... You won't know you need shielding until you DO, than more cables...... In the old-days, before ROMEX, houses had conduit into which wires were 'pulled'. And since th conduit was to ground, the wires were shielded as a result. Today? We live in RFI city with no shielding other than what YOU provide. I'm always of the opinion that for power, it's difficult to seriously overdo it. www.parts-express.com/brand/wattgate/251I suspect these come from the same factory as MOST of the others, including some of the 'high priced'. Link to the wattage page on PartsExpress. If you had wanted to do a group buy? Probably could have saved a few $$$

You can do it for a LOT less.
I'm not wealthy, either. I'm in the 'retired' category so surplus $$$ at a minimum....
Prices for DIY stuff is off-the-charts. I just looked, figuring I could diddle together a couple 2 meter cords. Call it a purchase of 14 feet to allow for my poor cutting skills. The Belden at parts express would be 83803, which would be perfect for higher power amps. It is a 12x3 and is both high count of fine wires per conductor but also double shielded. Nice. But for ME? 11.63$ per FOOT works out to North of 150$. Add in connectors? It starts to get weird. And I could purchase the well-regarded Pangea cords for less. But they'd be 14ga....not 12. Belden 19364 is 14ga and just over 4$ per foot. That's <60$ for what I need..... That would be good for nearly any piece of gear, and for longer runs, too.
I'll renew my offer for a 'group buy' which would save a bundle.
As for connectors? I need to look for them, too. Wattgate was reasonable at one time, but now appears to be too much $$$ for the average DIY person to end up actually saving any $$$. Alternatives MUST be out there.......
A sidenote?; The home stores do NOT carry anything in IEC that I can find.....maybe I'm missing it?

I agree regarding the gauge. An entire exercise where appearance takes priority over resistance. Bill
