I/O Magic DVD drive, PC external, won't open (solved)

My well-used I/O Magic DVD drive attached externally to my PC will no longer open. It sounds like it's trying to - either via the open button on the front, or via software command, but it doesn't budge. I've tried prying it open but it seems well stuck. My main use is ripping CDs. Anyone have any thoughts what else I might do? Is there a secret incantantion ("open sesame"?) It was working here and then decided not to. I'm sure I can replace it for not much moolah, but before that...

Try turning it upside down or sideways, then try to open.
Just a thought.
