While most expensive so-called "audiophile USB cables" are snake oil... there are differences between USB cables. And, unfortunately, the update process on the UMC-1 is quite fussy.
First of all, really old "printer cables" may only be rated for "USB 1"... (unfortunately there's no way to actually tell). A USB 1 cable will work with a printer, but probably won't work well with a USB hard drive, or to update the UMC-1. (You really want at least a USB 2.0 rated cable.)
Beyond that, the USB update port on the UMC-1 is quite fussy, so it may not even work with some USB 2.0 cables. Your best bet is to keep the cable as short as possible - 1 meter if possible. You may also find that some USB ports on some computers work better than others. there are a lot of possibilities are you using a pretty short usb cable Thank you for the reply, no i am using a regular printer cable. does it matter? i will try to get a shorter cable and will update.

Thank you Keith. I tried with 1 meter Wireworld chroma audiophile cable (you are right about the snake oil part:) no luck! it still going through the reset commands. tried with windows 7 32 bit version on safe mode too.
@ lynnmass
The unit had issue recognizing HDMI video signal from a cold start, it will acquire signal eventually but.., that's why i attempted the firmware update. I think i flashed successfully at first because i verified the 7.04.19 but after one day while starting for first time it kept on showing the loading screen.
