Looking for an alternative to Foobar2000, Roon, JRiver? Which do you prefer and why? Sound Quality and bit perfect playback a must.

I sometimes use it with Roon but I've never used it as a standalone player.

So far I am loving it as I could never get Foobar2000 to output DSD/DSF files properly to my microrendu/2Qute. All filters are OFF.

Looking for an alternative to Foobar2000, Roon, JRiver? Which do you prefer and why? Sound Quality and bit perfect playback a must. Two quick questions:
1. Are you playing from a dedicated PC, or one that you intend to dedicate as a source? 2. Are you using a Windows machine, or using a machine with a different OS (i.e. a Linus variant, or an Apple variant)?

I have been using Jriver for around 5 yrs now. I run it on a windows 10 computer straight to a DAC for 2 channel and via wi-fi in my living room system. I have had very good luck with this. Jriver used to have a 30 day trial period

I gave JRiver a 30 day try. Did not play nice with too many of my ISO files, etc.

I've tried lots of players and personally I still prefer FooBar2000.
I don't use any sort of automatic library control or management, so I don't care about those sorts of features. I'm also not especially interested in any sort of deep content - all I really care about is playing the music when I select it.
I've used FooBar2000 for years - and it's always proven to be both straightforward and very reliable. It can be a bit complicated - for example you need to install plugins for WASAPI mode and for playing SACDs and SACD ISOs - but there are lots of third-party plugins for it.
(FooBar2000 and everything associated with it is also free.)
I've used HQPlayer and it's... interesting. It offers a huge choice of different filters and upsampling options - many of which sound slightly different from each other.
(If you like having lots of options to tinker with then you will like HQPlayer.)
Note that some of the filter options in HQPlayer require a MASSIVE amount of processing power - and, if they don't get it, you will experience dropouts, stuttering, and other odd issues.
(I had it installed on a dedicated Quad Core i7 with 8 gB of RAM - and that was NOT sufficient to successfully run some of the more complex filter options in HQPlayer.)
