Bottom line question:
Is anyone running 3 B1 speakers for their home theater front soundstage? Interested to hear how that sounds.
Here's the situation:
My UMC-200 recently died. I live in a townhouse and intend to move to a single family home sometime within 3 years so I don't want to make a "big" investment in gear not knowing what that home will be like. To replace the UMC-200 I decided to get a Marantz SR6012 from Accessories4Less. I wanted something simple to setup that has a good smartphone app for control, and this fits the bill. I am currently only using it as a preamp and powering everything with my Gen2 XPA5. Only running a 3.1 system at this time.
The UMC-200 currently has a trade in value of $250, so I am thinking about how to use that. Since I don't need a processor or amp, I think I've settled on using that money to get some airmotiv speakers, which I've been looking at for quite some time. I currently have Paradigm CC-370 v4, Monitor 7 v3, and PS-1000 v4. I want to spend as little out of pocket as possible right now, so I'm looking at what I can get for the $250 plus the sale of 1 or more of these speakers.
Option 1: Sell the PS-1000 and use that + the $250 to get a Airmotiv S12. At most I'd guess $250 is the absolute most I could get for the PS-100, so I'm looking at $200 or more out of pocket for this option.
Option 2: Sell the CC-370 and Monitor 7s and get the C2 and a pair of B1s (keep the PS-1000 sub). This would set me up for any future home theater setup by having a solid center channel to build from. I'm guessing I'd need $100-$200 out of pocket for this.
Option 3: Sell the CC-370 and Monitor 7s and get 2 pair of B1s, and run three of them for the front sound stage (keep the PS-1000 sub). I've been reading some articles on the benefits of having 3 identical speakers for the front and the compromises with having a horizontal center channel. I can probably go this route without spending any cash out of pocket and it gives me the most flexibility for future setups because I'm not "committed" to a C2 center setup.
I had been leaning towards option 2 until I started reading about having identical speakers, and the downsides of a horizontal center channel speaker. This has me thinking 3 B1s may be a great option while I'm in my townhouse. I assume I can't buy a single B1, so I'd just get 2 pairs.
I appreciate any thoughts on this, and impressions from anyone currently running 3 B1s.
Thank you.
