When an Input is set to Input:5.1 Mode:Auto and Auto chooses PLIIx it always defaults to PLIIx Music. I hate this. I want to make it choose PLIIx Movie instead. Can this be done?

+1 i always wondered about that but it never bothered me after awhile i quit changing from PLIIx Music to PLIIx movie. Now i leave it where it is unless I am watching a cable movie > PLIIx movie or listening to music through my pc > All Stereo. I guess if it bothers you enough you could go into settings and change the input for that source for 5.1 mode > +PLIIx movie or whichever mode you would want. I just leave it at default and then change when i feel its needed or wanted using the remote.
Crap so while im thinking about this: what is surround, say im watching a bluray in 7.1 HD. The onscreen readout will say 7.1HD or whatever the bluray is for the input but the output will say "surround". What is surround? I always assumed it was the same as the input but ive always wondered why it wouldnt be showing the 7.1HD or 5.1HD or whatever the bluray format is? Maybe because Dirac has hijacked the signal of the format and did its thing that i can no longer be consider the original format?
OH and sorry about the thread takeover....

Couple things. First, there should be a toggle added to the Auto setting within the audio settings for each input to choose which PLIIx mode to default to.
Second, krauley, my understanding of "Surround" is for when 5.1 is detected the audio will upmix to 7.1 if your speaker allotment is such, this works for my system. I'm not certain if 2.0 is upmixed with this setting. And your apology is accepted, may we never bring up the ugliness again. (As in "Bring on the ugliness", in "The Jerk", Steve Martin re cat juggling) (( I amuse myself! ))

Just click the Cinema button on the remote yeah, it's gotten to be really annoying. every. single. time. It defaults to MUSIC, I want it to default to MOVIE. I'm gonna get that Honda robot to turn on my system so I don't have to press one button. Hey, if the XMC-2 can be set to default to Movie then that is a great reason to upgrade!

There won’t be Movie or Music modes on the XMC-2 as Dolby PLIIx would be replaced by Dolby Digital Surround which does not diferencies between music or movies. Dolby discontinued PLIIx up mixer and replaced it with Dolby Digital Surround with the introduction of ATMOS.

However, for those continuing users of the XMC-1 it would be a nice feature to be able to select which PLIIx mode they wish to make as a default. And, according to Homer Simpson: Default, the two sweetest words in the English language. Dee Fault, Dee Fault, Dee Fault . . . .

Also Keith explained this in another thread when we asked him why they took away PLIIx up mixer from the RMC-1.

Dolby Music expansion of 5.1 to 7.1 is correct and best practice behaviour!
I researched it a lot about three years ago when I got the XMC-1 and there are many articles as to why Music mode is the correct one to expand the two rear surround channels of 5.1 to the four side and rear surround channels to listen in 7.1
I am heading out for the night so cant google the references, but I am 100% certain that it is technically correct.
You would not (probably) want to expand 2.0 movies to 5.1 or 7.1 using the Dolby Music PLIIx as the Dolby Music mode emphasises the centre channel and introduces the centre width setting for this (plus maybe panorama and or dimension - I can't remember as I never use it).
You will note that using the XMC-1 PLIIx to expand 5.1 to 7.1 there is no centre width setting available as PLIIx here only upmixes the rear surround and leaves the front 3.1 untouched.
