I just pulled the trigger on a NVIDIA Shield 4K HDR (on sale at $170) and a WD MyBook 8 TB external drive ($159). I'll hook up the Shield to a different input on my XMC-1 than the Roku Ultra. So, my family can use the Roku Ultra and have it set up like all the others in the house. And, I'll set up the Shield as the Plex Server and likely use it for my theater movie watching (my concert disks and such...).
The BluRay drive/ripper should arrive tomorrow.

Mark, The shield works well as a server but getting the files on it (updates) is a real pain. I set my system up that way initially and then went back to a PC because of the file management issues. The shield should be used as a player as it supports both uncompressed audio (using bitstreaming over HDMI, IE you need a good receiver) and also does a nice job with subtitles. I tested a 4k roku and found issues with both of these... If you are planning to use a roku make sure you select the compressed audio channels to prevent transcoding on the server. If you can set things up for direct play then the server can be very weak but if you need transcoding you need either a newer graphics card or a newer intel chip (quicksync stuff).

What was difficulty getting the files onto the Shield? It looks like I can map storage attached to it as a network drive, then either rip directly to that storage, or rip it to my PC then move it to the storage attached to the Shield. Or, am I missing something? And, I'll only be using the Roku on some ordinary TV's (not my HT), so I'll set them to compressed audio/ Thanks for the tip! For the HT, I'll be using the Shield in all its full glory to my XMC-1. Mark

I was thinking that if I upgrade to the XMC-2/RMC-1L/RMC-1 that I might get issues...seems like that's the last remaining issue with the RMC-1 and the XMC-1 w/the new HDMI board...still some dropouts and odd noises here and there, mainly with streaming. I do hope they solve that...not just for me but for everyone wrestling with it. Mark I'm not having any audio issues with PLEX on my AppleTV running full MKV rips through my XMC-1 with the v3 HDMI board. Watching Game of Thrones, however....

Or, am I missing something? It's been a while but I had a USB storage array (same one I now use on the NUC) connected directly to the shield and there were issues using the shield as a server. You may be better going the other direction but the whole point for me was for the shield to be the device that's on 24x7 and that didn't work out well at all. Also be aware you will want some local fast storage for the database and also if it does any transcoding you need the buffer drive to be fast. On my NUC its an M2 so I don't have any issues but with a slow USB drive you might have some problems...

The BluRay drive/ripper arrived yesterday. In the coming days, I'll be setting it all up and ripping some disks to try it. Mark

I use Plex as well. For me it works because I was setting up my video library and could use their naming conventions from the start. My music is mainly managed by Media Center, which does a smashing job, and I am not willing to do the renaming necessary to get the full Plex goodness for all my music.

I have my Plex account up and running with my new nvidia Shield as the Plex Server. I did 4 test rips, and everything scanned in nicely into my Plex Library, with proper cover art and all!
Now, I'll focus on ripping a few disks every now and then. I can listen to my headphone station #1 or watch TV while they rip.

I was worried this would be hard/confusing, but so far - not. There are many great videos on the web + I got a lot of help from folks here. Thanks to all those who helped!
The hardest part was getting started - like most techie things, you have to know enough to know what to ask and to figure out what you still need to learn. I started from ground zero on everything on this topic.

I use a plex server attached to a 60TB NAS. Streaming direct to apple tv/roku. I use makemkv for all of my rips, including tv shows. There are many different drives out there that will support UHD ripping with makemkv. I will not directly point to how to find this, just google libredrive firmware. There are tools that users have made to allow you to roll back your firmware in less that 2 mins for any supported drives. Of course rolling back your firmware comes with some risk that you can brick your drive... not unheard of, but not very common.
