I have an OPPO UDP-203. Do I need a surround sound processor as well or will the OPPO do the surround processing? Thank you for your consideration.

The Oppo is a fine product but it excels in playing media IMO. If you need time to save for a true processor then it should hold you over just fine but I do believe there are much better options. I have an Oppo 203 and the RMC-1 is Schiits and Giggles better then the 203. More options from Emotiva are on the way or theres a plethora of other options.!

Yes, the Oppo can decode the surround sound codecs and output them via the 7.1 analog outputs you could then run directly to your power amps and subwoofers. While it will sound very good, it might not give you all the convenience and flexibility of a dedicated processor, which might also sound better and give additional benefits like room correction. If you’re just giving SS a try for the first time, there’s no reason not to try it, you can always add a processor later.

Depends on your source count now and tomorrow. Not touching the sound thing. If Blue Ray and streaming is all you do, sure you could. How important is video switching, latest audio codec support, and more options as you expand your system. How about Zone control? Premplifier Processors are the power brains and directors of the show. Your call, but options as you grow your system are always nice.

I would generally consider the Oppo's (I have the 203 and 103) as good backups for a surround processor. When all I had was the 103 and I needed to send in my UMC-1 for updates, I switched to using the Oppo 103 temporarily.
As indicated by others there is certainly less flexibility, and more clicks to switch inputs (and limited inputs). One of the things that stick out for me is that the speaker-to-subwoofer crossover you set with the Oppo's is used across all speakers, not individually settable per speaker as you normally would with a surround processor. If your mains go way deeper than your surrounds you will be compromising there. I also find that "easily" modifying just the trim on the center channel, usually while watching TV, to be an important feature - there's too much variability in center-to-mains activity per any given TV show.
So "in a pinch" you can certainly use the Oppo's while you wait for a full-fledged surround processor, but you can do it. I've even run cable TV into the Oppo as one of the alternate inputs.
