If you put your headphones on the opposite ear, things sound the same but different.....says a friend of a source that knows the sources source....allegedly.

The ideal preamp does not "sound" at all. But nothing is ideal, so yes you may hear a difference. Will it be better? Will it be worse? Only you will know that after you try.

I just watched a review of a bunch of phono preamps, the XPS-1 did not favor well, the favorite was the Mani from Schiit, one man's opinion but interesting nonetheless.

I will be going from a ART DJ PREII Phone preamp to a Emotiva XPS-1 Gen2 preamp, should I expect a discernible difference in sound quality or will it be all mentally induced This To Thisa considerable improvement. the first I use in my classroom. the 2nd is supposedly the same circuitry as in the XSP-1 preamp which I use at home.

I'm thinking I may order one and do a comparison, I just missed one for sale up here used a few weeks back dang it.

I have done a direct comparison several times with these two and the XPS-1 won every time. The Mani is good but the XPS-1 is definitely better and noticeable.

I wonder why he disliked it so much, really had nothing good to say about it ??

I wonder why he disliked it so much, really had nothing good to say about it ?? Not sure, could be a number of things. I found the Mani more laid back than the XPS-1. The XPS-1 was more detailed and alive; however, the XPS-1 has two different sounds when new and cold, after warm up and break-in of about 10 hours they sound fantastic. I liked it right out of the box cold but more so afterwards. I leave mine powered on and is always ready to go. I have had shoot outs with it, the Mani, Cambridge, and my upgraded Jolida JD9. For the money it's one of if not the best in its class. Would be nicer if all of the connections were in the back as it's not very cable concealing friendly but I have mine in the rear of my rack. My 2ch rigs all have phono stages with rear connections.

I'm curious what would change after time to change sound characteristics of it, I guess I will find out this week haha, my current phono pre the DJ PRE II is always on so the XPS-1 replacing it will be as well.

Good deal! After skimming the manual, page 4 states to leave it plugged in and powered on. I may have read the break-in time there too, don't remember. Edit.. Went back through and discovered that I purchased it in December 2014 for $141 shipped. Great buy imho.

Reviews are what they liked. Not necessarily what you will like. The pratfalls of reviews. Ultimately it is going to be you that will make the connection. You got to like it. I use reviews for trends, and feature data, ease of use etc. Not whether or not I will agree with them or not on the sound quality etc. Your mileage may vary.

Reviews do help to try and help make a decision though, I agree with what you say but the guy doing the reviews I posted is at least reviewing a bunch of products together back to back, I think that helps with remembering what stands out, I can think back to products I have had and remember what I liked about them, of course its my preference of what or how it sounds, a more natural resolving sound is what I like, not constrained or compressed sounding, I've had speakers that sound flat and compressed and ones that are more open and relaxed, It is hard trying to express in words haha.

The problem with reviews and reviewers is that they are telling you what they like. You need to find a reviewer that aligns with your taste in what you enjoy.
Personally I find my taste aligns with the british magazine What HiFi. I am to the point after several years and several pieces of equipment that I basically can trust their reviews for my taste. Its not a slam dunk, but a good guide for me.
So how are you liking the XPS-1?
