I'm just kicking some ideas around and since it's been like four months since I bought some speakers in the media room I figured it was time to change, lol. But my honest question is that I am still looking at the RMC-1, and of course it can handle 9.1.6. My current set up is 7.2.4 (.2 but just a split LFE signal) and if I do the RMC-1 I was debating if I would just go ahead and upgrade to 9.1.6 as well. My room is not huge, 12X17' in total. I am just wondering if anyone has actually gone from 7.1.4 to 9.1.6 and could hear any difference? I guess I would install another set of in ceiling speakers and another set of side surround speakers. I could also forgo the extra set of in ceiling speakers and then install front wides maybe?

I don't think it's just "another set of in ceiling speakers;" is your current set up compatible with adding two more ceiling speakers and being compliant with the recommended Atmos arrangement for ceiling speakers?

Another set of ceiling speakers won’t be placed in the ideal location, so that’s a good point. I would not be interested in pulling the old ones and repairing the holes in the ceiling. I’ll measure it all out and see how far off another pair of speakers would be compared to the Dolby recommendation.

I am in the same position. I currently am running a 7.1.4 system on Marantz AV7702 which is limited to 11 channels. I have ceiling mtd speakers in TF and TR locations and have two more of the same speakers waiting to go in the TM location. But, and this is a big but, if sources are going to be limited to 7.1.4, why bother? Even if some sources are not limited, additional atmos speaker locations beyond 7.1.4 will only serve to 'perhaps' locate object sounds more accurately, but the same sounds will be delivered anyway. So, I am in standby on the worth of installing my TM speakers, although if I upgrade to a RMC-1 or equivalent processor, I will probably go ahead and install them.

My answer won't help you, but it might help others from falling into your boat. I have the 8802a also (unfortunately STILL not up and running yet), but when I had my ceiling speakers installed, I decided to bite the bullet and put in 6. This was so all the speakers match (same brand same model), and they are all arranged properly for .6. If I never upgrade then so be it, but they are there if I need. My guess is I will upgrade, but probably not for a while anyway.
Note: So many other things have held me back on this project its not funny. And now we ARE starting our MAJOR kitchen remodel, so who knows when I'll get back to this. A big bummer.

How many speakers are you putting in the kitchen ceiling?

How many speakers are you putting in the kitchen ceiling? None at this time, but that could change. I already own a whole house Sherbourne amp that has never been removed from the box. First things first. 😉

Another set of ceiling speakers won’t be placed in the ideal location My room is 20' deep x 18' wide x 13' high and I currently have 7.2.4. I have contemplated 9.1.6,, but I am going to have to stick to 7.2.4 for the exact same reason, I have nowhere to put the width speakers. Once I add the middle height speakers, I would not be able to get the widths far enough away from the other speakers to truly be width speakers, they would be right next to the middle height speakers.
