It’s too bad that this new model doesn’t have a remote trigger when the ERC1/2/3 did.

😁 I get many people don't care about ergonomics. I do. If there were such a designation, I'd be a professional. 😉 Really. Actually there is. Ergonomist I missed my calling then. 😀 Funny thing is I'm joking and I'm not. My Dad used to tell people stories that even when I was a little kid I would do things, rearrange things, or do something a very certain way, and when he would ask why, I always had a specific answer that made logical sense. The biggest one I remember was his prized train set. A set the size of 2 ping pong tables, all custom made, with over 100 Kibri (German brand) models he put together himself, over about 20 years. He had them all placed around the set just sitting around where they looked nice, but made no sense to me. One day when I was probably 12 or 13, while he was gone, I rearranged them all so they would represent an actual town, with industry in one area, the downtown in another, and the country area up the road. I did it so logical roads could be placed, and a gradual slope could be added up to a mountain top with the castle at the very top. When he came home he was SHOCKED to say the least. But when I explained the whole thing and showed him why things were where they were, and showed him how the roads would run, he simply couldn't have been more proud of me. Bottom line, I can't help it. ☺️

Center is way better I agree. BUT, I still say ergonomics are wrong, BUT, it is a nice looking piece. They seem to be too worried about matchy matchy with looks. The power button is "UNDER" the loading tray? So you can't power it off unless you "close" it first? A big Looks good with other Emotiva stuff, but completely idiotically placed ergonomically speaking. As is with most other companies, who realize most people are right handed, the main control buttons are on, you guessed it, the right side. Not so with Emotiva. Lonnie must be left handed. Sorry guys, its still backwards. Flip the front panel around and it would be MUCH better. The back spread is AWESOME. A perfect 10. I agree about the ergonomics and maybe when they release the next ERC-? with corrected button placement it will also decode HDCD disc like the ERC-3 did. I don't think any Emotiva player actually DECODED HDCD, but I could be wrong. This ERC-4 will play those discs, it just won't decode them. The question is, will the XMC-1 or any other Emotiva processor decode them, because the digital signal out of the ERC-4 would send the info. As for ergonomics, not changing any buttons they have (give me a blank slate and I would change), it would have been ergonomically better to flip the orientation as they are, so the diamond orientation was on the right, then move the open/close button to the top of the diamond, put a slightly larger play button in the center of the diamond, and, sorry, move the power button to the far left side so its where most companies put it. The digital input button would be okay by itself on the left. BUT, I am still considering this as something I might buy. Have to get the rest of my stuff all working first though so it may be a bit.

I have the ERC-2 and as I recall, it does decode HDCD. Below is the link to the manual page in which the specs says one of the formats it plays is HDCD, and I am pretty sure at the time the player was introduced, that Emo was saying it did decode those discs. I had the ERC-1 and I believe those also decoded HDCD. I think if it could play an HDCD disc but not decode the HDCD portion, then a disclaimer would have been indicated. www.manualshelf.com/manual/emotiva/erc-2/cd-player-user-manual/page-10.html

All the nabobbing aside, CONGRATS EMOTIVA on introducing another player that is also a dedicated transport. Kudos, the world absolutely needs more transports.

Those players were before my time here on the forum so I was just going from memory. I do know the ERC-3 did not, it only played them.

I am guessing this is yet another rebadge

Holy crap, why has this stuff never been discussed much here? Oh, I know why. 😜 I think their gear looks pretty sweet. Only issue is I’m not sure about the warranty length, from the little searching I did it looked like only one year. I love the big meters and Class A amps though. Pretty good bang for the buck as well.

As I wrote in another thread. I miss a few things from ERC-4. Maybe a device needing new name? 😀
• USB input for playing audio files or connecting a hdd with your collection. • Network connection to access rhese files from elsewhere. • SACD native playback • HDMI output to send SACD digitally and support multichannel playback. • builtin streaming apps for audio. An extra that would have made ERC-4 THE unit to own for audio playback.

A CD player is very limiting, especially one that does not support anything extra. A CD player+ DAC with a little extra would be really nice. Many CD players today already have some of the features I listed. USB & SACD playback is not uncommon. The other three would make ERC a music machine that no other manufacturer has..

No point other than discussing ERC and venting my opinion that it could have been more than just a CD player.
High end multi function machines are lacking in the market. CD players aren’t.

Ok Just had to chime in on this thread...
To state the obvious. Nearly all the comments in this thread about The ERC4 are regarding looks and basically whether or not it works as it's designed and how fast it works and if you can dim a light! I agree ergonomics and appearance are considerable factors, believe me I know. I have one of the UGLIEST pieces of gear ever designed in the Manley Steelhead it looks like it was a prop on "Young Frankenstein" But Oh the music reproduction is ever so sweet! So as a previous owner of the ERC1,2 and 3 I do have an obvious question. How does it sound compared to it's previous iterations and to decks in it's price range? Can we just assume that it works? Although I did have a "failure" with every one that I had they on the whole were very serviceable and really performed better than their cost. As always Emo's build quality and rear panel options as well as the internal layout looks great but how does all that mesh with the boards, Dac(s), Power Supply, cap's and everything else to create a "live" performance in your space?

It shouldn’t sound much different than ERC-3. Other than different disc mechanism, digital inputs and cosmetics not much seem to have changed. However, ERC-3 was a really good CD player, much better than its price. Almost the only thing people complained about was the sounds from the disc mechanism, which is now fixed in ERC-4. One thing I didn’t like with ERC-3 was the fact that it always auto started all discs inserted, no way to configure this. If this has been fixed, other than not playing native SACD, it should be the best CD player in its price class.
