Hi Guys I am finally going to get me a 4k Blu ray player. I don't have any 4k blu rays and it likely won't see heavy (4k) use so I don't want to spend Oppo levels of money. TV is LG 65EF9500 (OLED). The most important requirement: it has to have a spdif digital audio output. Preferrably coax If it doesn't have spdif digital audio out it's a deal breaker. Prefer to keep it under $200 budget Also ideally support dolby vision and HDR 10. I also have a lot of 3d blu rays so I would like to retain 3d functionality. I'm assuming that it's a given that it will play them. I've found the Sony UBP-X700 player for $160 which seems to be a great price. www.amazon.com/Sony-UBP-X700-Ultra-Blu-ray-Player/dp/B078HXF9H2/For that it gives me Dolby Visions, HDR 10, 4k netflix and hulu apps and spdif digital output. So it seems to tick the boxes. I have been very pleased with the picture quality in the past of Sony products too. Any reason why not to go for this one? Any better suggestions? I wasn’t solicited for a recommendation so I’ll just ask a question. Does your LG play 3D movies?

I have had absolutely no problems with mine, works perfectly every time, plays every disc I have, including SACD’s. Gets periodic software updates, over the home wifi, no issue there either. Before I bought mine I back to backed it with a 700 and an Oppo 203 and I couldn’t tell any difference picture wise between them. It’s connected via HDMI to my XMC-1 and they get along perfectly.
Cheers Gary

The x700 will do what you need it to do and it takes up less space. 👍

First, you should be more specific than S/PDIF which can be either Coax or TOSLink, unless you don’t care (DYohn and I had this conversation earlier). I assume then Coax is good for you. Sony has always been one of the few that checked all the format boxes (including SACD), like the Oppo, except at a much lower price. We had a couple Sony’s that played well, but would lock up now and then, my wife got to dislike them, but I’ve been told that’s a problem of the past. Looks good to me!

My guy made made a big difference on my LG 65” C8, sure wish my LG did 3D, You know I’m a fan like you when it comes to 3D! I did find a great deal on my LG so I’ll just have to watch 3D movies o system #2. Which isn’t a slacker by any stretch! Your choice should serve you well IMHO

BTW, my 800 is an early version so it doesn't have Dolby Vision, but since I have a Samsung TV that doesn't affect me. As I have an Apple TV4K I have never used the streaming facility on the 800.
Cheers Gary

Why SPDIF? I thought it was for “industrial” hardware - most consumer gear doesn’t use it.

Terminology glitch - Yeah - EVERYTHING has coaxial (how I think of it). What I had in mind was the two rightmost on this:

Terminology glitch - Yeah - EVERYTHING has coaxial (how I think of it). What I had in mind was the two rightmost on this: Right, don’t see too much BNC, though it is a good connector, and still can be S/PDIF, I think the DC-1 has one. That might be fiber channel on the left, usually server farms, been a while. Don’t know what the bottom is?

Update: Thanks for everybody's advice. I went with Sony UBP-X700 4k Blu Ray Player. The only thing I 'm worried about is that there seems to be reports of glitches and freezing . However I am also mindful that 4k systems have lots of potential for glitches so it may be user or system error than the Blu Ray player. Almost every player I've looked at appeared to report glitches on Amazon. So here's hoping!

Wow, you're not online for part of a day, and you miss the party. Don't think I would have been much help, since I currently stream all my 4k content, don't watch 3-D content, and like Gary Cook, I have a Samsung TV.
Looks lie a lot of good advice, and a good choice.

Purchased the sony 800xm2 for $200 on black friday sale. Played 30 discs so far with no glitches and I love the fact that I can hook up to 9 Bluetooth things directly to the player. I really like the heavy chassis and Bluetooth feature. I don't really need the dolby vision as I don't have the tv to go with that. Great Picture and features for $200. Will use for years to come.

+1 on the Sony UBP-X700. I have been using it for about 9 months. No glitches. I have yet to do a critical compare, but I might get rid of my CD-100 and just use the Sony when I need to spin a disk.

+1 Sony UBP-X700 or X800 for a value buy. I got X800 for DVD-A playback, x700 does not. They have some nice extras- DLNA, smart apps, server play, streaming, USB, if it's a digital disc- stick it in & it plays. Face it, Sony makes a good transport, been doing it a long time.
I wanted the Sony ES model of the x800 for the front display & analogue out, but not at 2x the price.
