I have an XMC-1 with the 1.4 HDMI board? The handshaking for 4k with DirectTv Genie II does not work. It passes it through once then fails. I am looking for a solution but am coming up empty - no board upgrade, no near term upgrade to a new unit at $1k. A little frustrated - I have Emotiva products in two homes and it always seems like within 18 months of purchases by unit is end of life. I could live with that to an extent but the inability to use my 4k projector and watch sports in 4K may drive me away for good - especially with football weeks away. A long time customer...

Since the Genie II is a headless server, I'll assume that you're using a C61K Genie client. The C61K requires both HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 to support full 4K with HDR (HLG). It's not surprising that your HDMI 1.4 equipped XMC-1 is failing to negotiate and hold a signal. The HDMI 2.0b upgrade board for the XMC-1 is available HERE, but is currently out of stock. For the additional $600, it may be worth considering the XMC-2 upgrade path currently being offered. Hope this helps...

Have you called emotive to see if there are any of the intermediate boards that would allow a 4k signal through 1 of the ports? It's not 2.0b compliant, but might be something.

I’m using a DirecTV HS17 & C61K into my XMC-1 with the V3 board (HDMI 2.0). The C61K is actually the device that hooks to the XMC-1 via HDMI; the HS17 has the tuners and DVR (BTW both the HS17 and the HR54 are known as ‘Genie II’ so best to use your actual model number, which do you have? They’re both known as Genie II’s because they do 4K, but don’t remember what the V1 board’s 4K limitations are. I do not have any problems passing HD or 4K from my C61K through the XMC-1 and on to my Sony 900F, this includes HLG/HDR material. On the DTV 4K channel (104) my XMC-1 reports 2160p / 24 10 bit, I never tried this with my V1 board so don’t know if it would have worked. There were reports early on of problems with DTV and the V3 board but they’ve been resolved. I don’t remember hearing of any with the V1/1.4 board, but could have missed it. The standard troubleshooting would be to unplug everything wait a few minutes and plug it all back in, clearing any residual memory and EDIDs. Cables are also a troubles area, but less so with HD. My XMC-1 is over four years old and only Atmos / DTS is making it EOL for me. Edit: I wrote this before I saw the other reply’s

Thanks to all for the replies! I did call in but unfortunately didn't get a lot of guidance - unusual insofar as Emotiva is generally quite responsive. Anyway, I have kind of been racking my brain on this one because 6 months ago 4k from Direct TV (Genie 2; HS17-500 & Genie Mini C61K-700) was working with the XMC-1 V1.4. And I even had the DTV running in through input HDMI 1 (read somewhere only HDMI 2 & 8 would take 4K - don't know if that was accurate.)
I swapped HDMI cables, changed inputs, disabled CEC, reset the DTV boxes many times... but here's the kicker, when I go into the settings> display> resolutions on the DTV C61k, it will pass the 4k test, interestingly - while in the menu screen - the XMC-1 displays 3k x 2k @ 60hz... then when I exit the DTV menu it flips back and displays the content at 1080p.
When I moved the DTV to HDMI input 2 it still failed in the same fashion but this time the audio was all but removed after downshifting to 1080p - it would pop in every 30 seconds for a half second.
So why did it work months ago?
Near as I can figure - I was running a DVI cable WITH AN HDMI adapter on each end, to the Epson UB 5040e. Could it be that it effectively was splitting off the audio and somehow helped the handshaking? (I am out over my skis a little here).
Months ago I purchased a high quality HDMI cable 20' which works fine on direct connect to the C61K.
I would upgrade board or possibly entire system but neither are available and I was given no visibility to when either would become available.
Thanks again for the insights and thoughts.

Another helpful test would be to connect your 20’ HDMI cable directly to the tv, to see what kind of signal to expect, and test it’s working. It’s also possible DTV implemented HDCP 2.2 in the last 6 months and that’s why it used to work — but just a guess.

Thanks, that is a good guess... I will do that again and confirm - I am pretty sure I did that before and it worked fine DTV to PJ
Question - on the 1.4 I read where only one HDMI Input and one HDMI output were 2.0 compliant - can anyone confirm which two those are? I am guessing HDMI input 2 and output 1?

One other question - I am not averse to putting an HDMI splitter into play and have the video come off one HDMI input and the audio off another but I am not sure that solves my problem? I just read where others have done that.

Hmm... don't know why you were able to pass 4K from DirectTV on a 1.4 HDMI board at one point with an XMC-1, and now no longer, but units do upgrade themselves with new firmware which might be a problem.
My experience with passing 4K to my (also) Sony 900F TV from DirectTV through an Emo MC-700, which DOES have HDMI 2.0 on three of its inputs also points out the persnickety nature of HDMI/HDCP. If I left the last channel used on DirectTV as 104, one of the few 4K channels they have, and booted up the TV and DirectTV unit at the same time (the DirectTV remote does this), and then the MC-700, it was extremely likely that the DirectTV box would issue an error message saying the downstream TV was not capable of 4K resolution, and defaulted to 1080P. My guess is that possibly the MC700 was too busy trying to connect to both units at the same time, and wasn't able to present proper 4K/HDCP credentials in time. My easy solution turned out to be: turn on one unit at a time, fully up, before turning on the next (in my case, I did TV, then MC700, then DirectTV 4k Genie box). This worked every time.
After the first year of "discounted" DirectTV prices, we changed our internet and TV services to a lower level to save money, so we no longer have a DirectTV 4k channel to test with (not that there was much to be begin with). UHD movies via an Oppo 203 have always worked just fine.
