Total noob here. I have and old yamaha dspa1 and I'm wanting to add the mc700. Anyone know if that is a good idea, temporarily until I save up for the amp? Also issues that I might have? I have googled a lot but my yamaha dspa1 is quite old, so not much out there.

If you have 5.1 inputs, you should be able to use the amplifiers. I couldn't find a back panel picture or manual on line. Just set the input to 5.1 or whatever they call it, and set the volume control at an appropriate level - probably up to about 2/3 rds of full volume. You'll use the MC-700 to control everything.
And welcome to the forum!

Here's a link with decent info: hometheaterhifi.com/volume_5_3/yamahadspa1processor.htmlThat unit has 5.1 analog inputs (only) so you could connect a processor to it; they are in the lower left at the bottom in the group section labeled "External Decoder Input". If you don't have the MC700 yet, unless you can score it for cheap AND don't plan on doing 4k, I would agree with Pete and get an inexpensive receiver to carry you over until you save enough for something more technically current. The MC700 is far too pricey for something as HDMI outdated and buggy as it is. You can get a decent receiver for 1/3 the price of the MC700, save up for something better, and then relegate the receiver for another room or sell it.

Thank you guys for the solid advice. My dspa1 is currently driving pair of polk rtia10. My old receiver has quite a beef amp section, so I don't want to replace it with a low end receiver. Maybe I should just bust out the credit card and get the amp and shop for a different processor. Seems you guys aren't crazy about the mc700, what would be the next decently priced processor?

It depends on your use case. What will you be watching? 1080P only? 4K? What's your TV/projector? What are your source devices? ATV? Roku? Cable box? 4k player? Betamax video? Etc...

Mostly 1080p tv, cable tv, some ps4, I would say 20% of the time I listen to music. I want to upgrade my speakers shortly in the future, so I think I will need separates so I'm trying to get there not all at once.
Thanks for the help guys.

Yes the External Decoder Input is your path for the MC700. Remember the DSP-A1 well. Recommended one to a friend many moons ago. Still going strong too, and he just loves it. Yamaha did a good one with the DSP-A1.
