I live in an apartment with a textured, plaster ceiling, so holes and attachments to the ceiling are not possible. I could stretch a tight wire from wall to wall, just off the ceiling and hang a couple of speakers over the seating area. My system is below, before XMC-2 swap-up.
1) Can anyone suggest suitable speakers; suitable for hanging? Light weight, unobtrusive but effective?
2) Any alternative ideas?
Sincerely /b

You can always get some of those Atomos speakers that sit on top of your Front Right and Left speaker and reflect sound upward. I know Klipsch makes some and Emotiva now has some too.

How do you have your side surrounds mounted?

I’ve never tried them, but some time back I googled “pendant speakers” and saw quite a few available, they look perfect for what you describe.

How do you have your side surrounds mounted? My sides are screwed to the wall; it's against the lease, but it can be easily, invisibly repaired. The sides and rears are (incorrectly) at ceiling level. (The speakers will all be moved/reconfigured when I upgrade to atmos.) Because the plaster ceiling is textured, it is very difficult to repair any holes. It's a nice ceiling and I hate to wreck it. /b

Yes, I'll probably settle on up-firing atmos speakers. Hanging stuff on the ceiling is going to be messy... Sincerely /b

Sincerely Are there already light fitting holes in the ceiling? If so then dual purpose them, light and speaker. Or use lamps in lieu of lights and hang the speakers alone from the exisiting holes. Or, if there are 2 light fittings/holes then join them up with a pice of aluminium box section and mount the speakers off that. Or mount the ceiling speakers high on the wall, on either side, in parallel wired (mono) pairs so that their image is centred between each of the 2 speaker pairs. Or mount brackets to the walls, join then up with aluminium box sections and mount the speakers off them (wiring fits nicely inside the box section). Paint ceiling coloured or in contrasting colour (eg; vinyl wrap fake timber beam) for effect. Where there is a will there is a way. Cheers Gary'
