Hi all, I'm still debating on the amp I want for the Wides channels, the purchase is still a few months away, is the 300 an over kill, or would it be better because of more headroom, and to have it available in case it takes over duties for something else in the future...

I had an A-300 on some outdoor deftech speakers and it did really well. And at one point I had it running my OMD-28s for a few days while I was changing some amps around and it did a really great job. It’s most likely overkill for just wides, but for the extra $100 it is well worth that in value over the 150.

What speakers? You'd be fine with A-100 even imo

The A-300 wouldn't hurt things. But I'm just saying A-100 or A-150 would do just fine. The demands on surrounds are very low and I've used the A-100 with Axiom m80 and it did just fine.

What levels do you listen at though gar ? Not very loud. I would about 68-71db average level with ocassional peaks nearing 80 db. Having said that the surround speakers still only get very little power demands even if you are playing a loud movie. Most of the power is taken up by the fronts and center. Any of the Emotiva amps are more than robust enough to provide the power needed for surround speakers. Don't get me wrong, if I had the choice my setup would be three XPA-1's gen 2 on the front and say monoblock PA-1's for all surrounds lol. But that's only because I like SWAG.

Agree with both Garbulky and David - while the A100/150 will be fine, the A300 gives you future flexibility for $100. Either route is the correct answer.

Why not A-500/A-700 to give you atmos flexibility 110w/ch- 2ch and 80w/ch all chs. I believe 80w/ch is a good rating for surround- plenty of headroom for an average size room. A-800 bridged is 100w/ch x4 or 50w/ch x8
If I were starting over, I'd go XPA-3 and Basx for other chs.

And I watch movies at 75db with peaks of 105db not including lfe.. so I would require 95 watts for my 99db speakers at 16 feet to reach that spl.. And 54watts to each of my 93db surrounds and Atmos speakers at 6feet. Apparently the a-100 isn't enough even for my high sensitivity speakers..

Keep in mind most of that volume and power demands comes from your fronts. So your surrounds will not be hitting 105 db. The total volume of 105 db comes from a combination of all your speakers not from each speaker. So lower amp power requirements especially if one is going for a separate amp for just the surrounds.

Buy my PA-1's Sales pitch of the day Don't sell them!! You'll regret it! Well if I could get $900 CAD for my three UPA-1 amps I would sell them and buy another PA-1 but I would need to net $300 CAD for each amp as that's what I'm into them for a few months back, the PA-1 is much lighter and cheaper to ship haha
