Looks like a Fulla 3 is now available and the Fulla 2 is on closeout, and also another new DAC/Amp the Hel which like the new Fulla 3 has a Mic input but has more power and options than the Fulla 3, the Hel looks pretty sweet in Black and Red, aimed at Gaming and Podcasts. www.schiit.com/products/fulla-1www.schiit.com/products/hel

Do I sense a shift from Emo to Schiit?

Do I sense a shift from Emo to Schiit? Schiit, like Emo, makes great gear at budget conscious price points. I own a Schiit Freya+ instead of an Emo preamp simply because I wanted to try tubes. I am quite impressed with its sound and build quality. I also own four Emo amps and I am equally pleased with their performance. I really can't say I prefer one of these manufacturers over the other. I am not looking to add any new gear any time soon, but I do know the next piece will be a DAC. If I were to buy today, I'd probably go with a YGGY. However, I am not buying today and if Emo comes out with a new DAC when I am seriously looking, I will certainly give strong consideration to their offering. Then again... I could find something I like by an entirely different manufacturer.

The new and improved Bifrost 2 takes what used to be their entry level DAC to new heights. But alas I may be left to upgrade my original Bifrost to AK4490 and Gen 5 USB for $250 rather than $700 for the Bifrost 2.

However, DAC speak confuses me to no end and I'm curious. If it's just 4490s you want, why not Modi 3 for $99, or Modi multi bit for $249? Is the implementation different somehow, even though the same manufacturer?

The short answer is that the DAC chip is only a small part of what's involved in the functioning of a DAC unit. While a poor quality DAC chip can certainly limit performance... A good quality DAC chip doesn't necessarily guarantee good performance. And even a really high performance DAC chip is going to perform better with better circuitry around it.
There is a lot of other circuitry that goes with that DAC chip... and much of it helps determine how the entire unit is going to sound.
Incidentally, the Modi uses an AK4490, which is a high-performance delta-sigma DAC chip... The Modi Multibit uses a different type of DAC chip altogether...
The actual details are extremely complicated.... (especially since most delta-sigma DACs are technically multi-bit delta-sigma DACs anyway...)
However, suffice it to say that a "multi-bit DAC" works differently internally than a delta-sigma type DAC.... And SOME people are convinced that multi-bit DACs sound better (although not everyone agrees there).
However, regardless of the way they sound, multi-bit DACs are more difficult to design and build, so they tend to cost a bit more.
Unfortunately, because DACs are so complex, unless you know a lot about the technology, it's not always easy to equate the features listed on a spec sheet with how one will sound.
And, to be brutally honest, many DAC manufacturers spend a lot of extra money on impressive-sounding technical details, and still end up with a poor result... While others manage to deliver excellent sounding DACs that don't include all sorts of fancy technology...
Schiit offers a wide selection of options... and their products tend to be well built and reasonably priced... However, if you're not familiar with DACs, it would pay to to read a bunch of reviews, and note what people do and don't like about particular models. (With DACs, even more than with other audio components, don't assume that a more expensive DAC will sound better... or that you will necessarily prefer the way it sounds.)
