For roughly the same money, what is that money better spent on. An unbalanced monoblock, or a differential stereo amp? I know not many people have likely been able to test this, but are there any Emotiva guys that can weigh in, is there even a difference or is it so small that it makes no difference?

If those were my only choices, I would go for the DR-2.

Power wise the DR-2 wins fairly big (550WPC versus 300 WPC in 8ohm). I would think the only advantage on the HC-1 was if you wanted to have really short speaker runs you can do that with mono blocks where as the DR-2 would sit in between your speakers. Although I have doubts that it makes a big difference. I really love my DR-2 and I wouldn’t trade it for a pair of HC-1s.

As much as I like mono blocs, or at least the thought of them, its never been quite clear to me why Emotiva brought the HC-1's to market. Had they been fully differentially balanced it would have made much more sense. Effectively a less powerful version of the DR-1's but otherwise the same level of performance less the power for those who either don't want to spend that much or who don't need or want the additional power.
I would concur with the other two comments, DR-2.

I would concur with the other two comments, DR-2. With all due respect, the HC-1s are not less powerful versions of DR-1s. The dual differential design of the DR-1s is a major departure from the HC-1s. I do agree with you though about even offering the HC-1s. I would consider them if they were dual differential like the the DR-1s. That being said the HC-1s will easily power any speaker likely to be connected to them. I am presently using the XPA-2 Gen 2 into Magnepan 1.7is which are a 4 ohm load. The HC-1s would increase available power by 100 watts but I'm never approaching that now. I kind of wish Emotiva had used the form factor of the HC-1 for the DR-1. I'll bet the modules would fit. At some point I will probably step up to the DR-2, not for more power but for the advantage of the dual differential design.

emotifan, Hmm I hate to bust your bubble but indeed the DR-1's are considerably more powerful than the HC-1's. 600/1000 WPC into a 8/4 ohm for the DR-1's while the HC-1's are 300/600 WPC into the same impedance. Whether you need, want or are willing to pay for the difference is another discussion though.

If your looking for sound, you'd be better off with a PA-1. The consensus is half the power, but with increased finesse.

What I was getting at is the HC-1s are not versions of the DR-1s with less power. I know they have less power. They're just not fully balanced using two amp modules per channel.
