Many complain that integrating a traditional sub with Maggies is problematic, and Magnepan developed the DWM (dipole woofer module) to address this.
The dwm doesn't directly extend the bass response lower, but adds panel area to increase bass output. And, interestingly, some reviews report perceived bass extension lower using the dwm.
With the dwm, my 3.6/R speakers have more effective panel area than 20.7s.
When adding the Magnepan DWM bass module to larger Maggies, Magnepan suggests adding a 1.4mh inductor and/or resistors to tailor the response of the DWM.
This inductor value will roll off higher frequencies at about 200 hz, too high imo. Since these parts effectively serve to alter the crossover, I decided to try the Parts Express Dayton BSA 200 watt crossover / amp to actively tailor the response much more effectively to my specific room and speaker placement.
Works like a charm in my 14,400 cubic foot room. And other freestanding stereo sub amps with adjustable crossover frequency and level should do fine, too.
Benefits:
Stereo (can drive two dwm panels) Adjustable hf rolloff frequency (I settled on about 70hz) Adjustable level (and remote included to get it perfect from listening position) More than adequate power into very low impedance - 200 watts into 2 ohms No need to interfere with main speaker outputs to drive dwm Line level outputs to drive other components if needed Very low price (less than $200)
Very happy with results!

Thanks for the info. I've wondered how one would integrate the DWM. Sounds you found a great solution.

Sounds like a great solution. If I were not happy with how my sub integrates with my 1.7's, I'd try it.
Out of curiosity, what do people find problematic about integrating a sub with Maggies? I just simply tried it and liked my results, so I've never looked back.
