The article said "definitive best 50 albums for audiophiles" but then says "list of 50 records...they'll give your hi-fi a workout". So that mean LPs only? The whole list goes to crap if remastereds are included.SACD, DVD-A & Hi-Rez changes everything. If we stick with the lowest common denominator- digital CD's the list is compilable. Not everyone has LPs or Hi-Rez.
Slowhand remastered SACD version is very good (by reviews), but the original CD is about average.
I owned Denon DVD-3800 that plays CD & DVD-A, not SACDs. This year we got Sony UBP-X800 player, the first SACD capable.

DTS audio and Frampton still at his best along with the late great Bob Mayo on the guitar 🎸. Bill

Those Clapton surround mixes are tasty. Difficult to achieve from a recording destined for two channel. Not all of them work to my ears! Abraxas, a great record, sounded a little gimmicky with all the swirling percussion and such. So I got the stereo SACD. Marvelous!

Don't know about "Audiophile", but some of MY favorites (Vinyl or CD): I mention these because I feel that they either exhibit what I feel are unusually good dynamics. or those with what I feel are good ambience - putting you "in the room" or "in the front row" - BOSTON - First album and "Don't Look Back" (My First Rock-N-Roll Album - I wore-out my first copies)
- PHIL COLLINS - Face Value (I feel that this was a truly excellent recording)
- PETER GABRIEL - "In Your Eyes" (got it on a 45 RPM LP-Sized single with an extended mix with more African drums in background)
- DIRE STRAITS - "Brothers in Arms"
- DONALD FAGAN - "The Nightfly" (DF & Walter Becker were known for being OCD about the mix used on their final versions)
- ALAN PARSON'S PROJECT - (Almost anything done by them as others have noted) "Eye in the Sky" & "Stereotomy")
- KANSAS - "Monolith" (Wide variety of instruments and sounds - sometime in unusual combination and WIDE dynamic range)
- MICHAEL JACKSON - "Thriller" (yeah, it's "Pop" - but it was REALLY well done and still a FUN lighter listening)
- ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA - "Face the Music" & "Out of the Blue"
- ANNIE LENNOX - "Nostalgia" (Ms. Lennox is one of my all-time fave vocalists.)

There's a bunch of other live albums I like a lot but unfortunately the recording quality is very low. It's too bad because the music itself is really good (IMO). Certainly nothing close to "audiophile" standards but good tunes nonetheless. A few examples...
Queen - Live Killers UFO - Strangers In The Night Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo Bill Withers - Live At Carnegie Hall Elton John - One Night Only Fleetwood Mac - The Dance Journey - Captured Scorpions - World Wide Live Triumph - Live At The US Festival

Also, I am suspicious of any list of top audiophile recordings that does not include something by Steely Dan or Mannheim Steamroller.

I was able to purchase my concert venue on CDs on the way out of the show. He played other's songs as well, but did an awesome version of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun. That CD is very personal and I see myself in that seat every time I listen to it!
