Currently I'm using my XSP-1 in a likely unique configuration. I have Legacy Focus SE's for my mains and a Marquis HD for a center. My Oppo UDP-205 runs balanced to the XSP-1, then the preamp drives all my XPA-1 amps balanced as well. I'm using the summed subwoofer output on the XSP-1 run full-range through an XLR volume adjustment pot to level match the center to the mains. This works really well.
I'm curious if I get one of the refurb XMC-1's available now, if I can configure that to run my system in a 3.0 setup like I am now, this time running an HDMI from the Oppo to the XMC-1 instead of using the balanced outputs.
Thanks and happy holidays.

You will find the XMC-1 a great choice for your interest! No issues with your configuration. And you can't beat the price! Enjoy ! Get the dirac license to go with , you won't be disappointed.

The XMC-1 does not have a "summed full-range subwoofer output". Therefore you will not have that exact same option. However, because the XMC-1 is a true surround sound processor, you will have a lot more flexibility, and a lot more options to choose from.
Simply tell the XMC-1 that you have three speakers - Front Left, Center, and Front Right.
You will then be able to do whatever the Oppo allows you to do by having it send a multi-channel PCM signal. But you will also have the option of using the bass management and surround sound options built into the XMC-1 instead. You will be able to use the actual center channel on surround sound content that includes one.
You will also be able to synthesize a center channel for stereo content using PLIIx.

How good is the PLIIx for generating quality center fill on music playback compared to what I'm doing now with my XSP?

Too late. Units are already sold out. Again.
