Yesterday I updated the firmware on my XMC-1 (purchased new in 2015) which has the new HDMI board (which I installed back in August 2019). I have been running v5.8 for a while now and the video switching speed was pretty long which prompted me to update.
Before the update I set factory defaults and hard-power cycled after shutting down the unit. After the update, I set factory defaults again and proceeded to setup my unit using the settings that I wrote down before updating. You know, you have to write this stuff down y'all. Distances, levels, all of that! Ok, so after 20 minutes of putting it all back in, I went to advanced settings and chose backup settings then it confirmed. I usually like to do a fresh boot after making all of these changes so I shut down and power cycled the unit. After boot, all settings had cleared back to factory defaults. It didn't do that on v5.8. *Insert choice words here! #@$!!*
So, I re-downloaded a fresh copy of the firmware from Keith's post and went through the whole update process again. This time, I just made a couple of small changes to the settings (one being "FL distance=1 ft" just to test), rebooted without backing them up in advanced settings menu, and the settings kept. Then, I made one more change, backed them up in the advanced settings menu, then rebooted. My settings reverted back to that first set of changes that includes the test parameter of "FL distance=1 ft". All settings I made just before the backup were eliminated.
Lastly, I set factory defaults, made all changes to the settings according to my setup, and rebooted. Settings kept. I shut unit down overnight and rebooted this morning and all settings seem to have kept.
Summing it up for v5.14, just don't backup your settings in the advanced settings menu lest you lose your current settings.
A few other things to mention:
- The HDMI switching time is much shorter... thank you!
- Twice while adjusting the settings, the front panel display froze and was only displaying gibberish. I rebooted and all was ok with that. I could not duplicate it to take a picture of it to use in this post.
- As noted in another thread that DSD checking was switchable for each HDMI input, I couldn't find the setting for that.
- I never figured out what switching the HDMI Type from 2.0 to 1.4 is for. Seems to work either way as I don't have any 4k stuff yet other than a Roku Ultra. My display is a Sony 1080p projector.

P.S. this was backing up to the internal memory... I did not try backing up to USB.
