Hi all,
Just curious, on my DR3 when reaching 82 on the volume the screen displays "Reference". What does this mean?
Enjoy, William

What screen? The DR3 only has 3 led's as far as I know or are you referring to the preamp?

If your Onkyo is calibrated, then that is true and you are at "reference" level. This calibration could occur manually through the use of an SPL meter and test tones or automatically e.g. AccuEQ.
THX Reference Levels specifies that your subwoofer peaks are 115dB while the rest of your speakers will peak at 105dB. The average program level will be 85dB. For various reasons, reference level is generally too loud for a home environment. Most people listen 10-20dB below that.

I think you just explained why the calibration of the Onkyo exhibits strange final gain settings. For example, LF -12db C -14db RF -12db S -15db. Why would everything be in the minus? Couldn't understand why the above couldn't be changed to LF 0db C -2db RF 0db S -3db The below is what I ended up changing the gains to after Onkyo calibrations. Needlessly said 82 on the volume is much louder than before.

Yes, your reference level is 10dB higher than THX spec now. Probably nothing to worry about. Presumably, one would be choosing the volume with their ears and not the absolute number.
