This is the place for dumb questions and I probably already know the answer, but I'm going to put it out.
I have Thiel CS1.6 speakers up front with black grill cloth. I have a Thiel SCS3 center channel with black grill cloth. They all match. I just purchased a used Thiel SCS4 to use as the center channel....always wondered if the sound would be better, could not pass on the great used price.
The SCS4 has a perforated metal grill that allows you to see the driver. It looks fine, but in this case won't match the front speakers. I was thinking about covering that metal grill with black speaker grill cloth. How badly would that affect the sound? Is this just a stupid idea?
In the end I probably won't do it, but just wondering.

Only ONE way to tell and that's try it. In reading speaker reviews over the years, I've heard it 'both ways'. Some reviewers remove grills and others insist on leaving them on. Whoever built the speaker SHOULD voice the speaker in the intended mode of use.
Anyway to build a FRAME and stretch some cloth? Remove the metal grill altogether?
Just an idea.

It’s a Thiel SCS4 and I think I’m just going to leave it alone. You can see the driver through the metal grill and I’ve gotten used to it.

Typical speaker cloth or grilles with large enough perforation to allow plenty of air flow have little effect (or any) on performance in most cases. I've got BOTH like your suggesting on my systems. The individual drivers have their own metal protective screen covers. The woofers have ABS type plastic rather than metal individual round covers and then there is a rubber pegged frame on top of everything with cloth stretched over. On or off, I can't detect a sonic difference, but the drivers stay looking like brand new. Bill

Last year while speaking with Bill Dudleston at Legacy, he told me that if you must have a speaker "cover" be sure you can read a newspaper through it.
He held up some of their speaker fabric about 1' from our eyes and looked at a newspaper laying on a table and it was clearly legible.

I would cover the whole face including the ribbon. Bill

Use a grill for driver protection from "accidents" and dirt/dust; when I do serious listening the grills are removed. This past weekend, I removed the T2 grills and the sound 'radiated' to the sides better. The Monitor Audio tweeters came with a copper metal cover that was removed shortly after buying them and have never been replaced. M.A.'s newer models did not have them. My JBLs came with those funky blue & orange grills and were always removed.

That’s where the problem lies....not the cloth itself so long as it’s airy enough. Bill
