Any thoughts or experiences on the relative merits of the two different speaker placements that Dolby recommends for 9.1.6 Atmos? The first layout includes six in-ceiling overhead speakers. Two front, two middle and two rear. The alternative keeps the two middle in-ceiling speakers, but replaces the front and rears with heights instead of overheads. Two high on the front wall and two high on the rear wall, all aimed at the listening position. I can see some potential pros and cons to each layout. With the six overheads, there is more even spacing of the speakers creating the overhead "audio bubble". Aim-ability is minimal, depending on the dispersion characteristics of the overheads and the limited aim-ability of some tweeters used. Using front and rear heights, they would be full range speakers aimed at the ears of the listeners, with the overheads placed directly above the listeners, minimizing the effects of limited dispersion, with some potential for better sound using the full range speakers. But my real question is, can you hear a difference? Or enough of a difference to steer in one direction as opposed to the other? I can do either in my long-delayed theater build and am torn by the two approaches. Real world experience of others would help to make that decision. If it makes no perceived audible difference, the decision can be made based on other factors. Thanks in advance! Chuck

The answer, as I see it, depends on the size of the room and the location and number of the seating positions.

Thanks Gary. The room will be about 18' wide x 20' long with two seating positions, one at about 11' from the projection screen and the other about 18' back. Planning three seats in each row. The front row will be used 99% of the time.

The front row will be used 99% of the time. Thanks, with that seating layout the 6 ceiling speakers would be my choice. With the right source material the sound effect moment can then use the 3 dimensions. The problem is there’s not a lot of source material, but that applies to any 9.1.6 layout. Cheers Gary
