How often do you find it turns on? I ask because my DR-2 runs remarkably cool so I don't know if it ever gets warm enough for this to kick on.

G'morning David, The fan shows on about 1/3rd of fanspeed as I write this while ambient air in the house is 67 degrees [constant]. At the SPL I listen to various media it first comes on about 15 minutes into listening. Now I haven't changed the default thermal settings which should trigger on at 88 degrees. The model that I'm using has an operating range of up to 140 degree F.

I use their rack system fans and I'm very pleased with them.

No offense but on these Gen 3 amps this is a waste of money and time worrying about heat. Gen 2 now that’s another story but my DR 1’s and DR 3 run very cool. I’m not the least bit concerned about heat with these amps.

Nice alternative to the no longer produced Sherbourn C12! I have collected several of these.... Cheers! Chuck

No offense but on these Gen 3 amps this is a waste of money and time worrying about heat. Wouldn't that be dependent on not only room ambient temperature but if the amp is enclosed around by a cabinet or other heat generating components? Not only that but also how many modules the Gen 3 amp has? I imagine some house components in various environments such as closed racks or opened ones. Not saying that I'd worry about my amp if my ambient air temp was room temp and the amp was left in the open. I'm sure the Emotiva heat sinks and ventilation are pretty good for amps with fewer modules if made over kill to house many more modules.

I use their rack system fans and I'm very pleased with them. Went to their website. Well priced. I have no need as my main system is in an open rack, but I could see these being very useful in an enclosed cabinet. The ones that sit on top of a receiver or amp would also be useful if the component gets hot normally.

Geez...these fans things are a lot better than the ice cubes I've been using. Why didn't I think of that?

How about all the dust the unit may move inside your components? Is there any filter?

We just can’t allow a thread about cooling to go on without an Honorable mention to the Sherbourn C-12. I’m still using 5 of them.

I use an Aircom S6 on top of my XMC-1. The XMC and a XPA-5 sit in a cabinet with doors on the front ( the back is relatively open). The S6 keeps both pieces just warm to the touch. A 10 degree C drop in operating temp increases the equipment life by 2x. Cheap insurance overall.

What I’ve really enjoyed about the C-12 is that mine is inaudible but it can be configured to so many different uses. True, no digital readout of temperature but it can be set to one of three choices.

And may I also recommend an accessory - a digital thermometer with laser pointer. It will tell you the temperature of the amplifier case (tube or solid state), whether your house air conditioner is blowing cool enough, whether your BBQ pit's cheap thermometer is accurate, whether someone has a fever (with no touching of the body), and a bunch of other things. Cheap, accurate, and fun! You can also use it to torture cats!

Bill My buddy had an extra one he gave me, it doesn't go on much and does not blow air into the XMC-1, it draws from the bottom of the fan(top of the XMC-1) and exhausts out the back, so why not

Huh, for some reason my doctor only grabs the foot long thermometer and Vaseline when taking my temperature. Wonder why doc doesn't use the surface probes?

When the fan cycles, it's probably because your fan unit is blocking the natural ventilation space and making the XMC get warmer than it would if the space were there. That being said, the preamp doesn't get hot or elevate in temperature on demand like an amplifier......Don't worry......be happy! Bill
