Hi Lounge,
I wanted to share my recent experience with a pair of PA-1s playing an XMC-1 source with Sonus Faber Toy Towers and sometimes a JL Audio Dominion 110 sub.
This happened because I had an internal fault in one of my XMC-1L units causing it to cease powering the channel intermittently with no fault indicated on the front panel. For some time using video sources I was finding some dialogue hard to understand (when in 2 channel direct due to dropouts) and I had not been playing much music which would have revealed this sooner. I have a system in one of my garage bays where I make metal sculpture. To keep me “company” I have a DC-1 feeding XPA-100s to Magnepan .7i s mounted upside down on the ceiling and therefore out of the way. This system sounds awesome so I just assumed my indoor setup could never be as exciting.
I think that the intermittent failure was hard to detect watching tv (because direct would put out more 5.1 than 2) but I could tell it wasn’t sounding good. So I finally discovered and diagnosed the problem and sent the unit back for repair ($100 shipping and $250 to Emo ouch!). They did a great and prompt repair, no complaints.
While using a Mini X in the meantime (very good considering), I got the itch and ordered a pair of PA-1. Helped greatly but Glenn Young’s awesome and thorough review, I set mine up when I got them and just had them on for a few hours doing nothing. Then I started to play some music (lossy Apple music stream) just to get things going without really making any judgments. But as I was doing some reading listening at low volume, I realized that the music was really drawing me in.
Over the next few days, I spent more time with them and became more and more impressed. How could these tiny and affordable amps impress me so much after all these years even with some pretty good gear?
On a practical note, I can confirm that the three prong issue happened to me using the unbalanced connections, and also that these amps don’t play well with panels (the Magnepan .7i, in the other setup). However, with the Toy Towers, they are a revelation! The speed, precision, placement of instruments and soundstage has made me want to pull out all my best music and rejoice in hifi.
So here is my take on what is happening, and I would love to hear thoughts from others. Because the Toy Towers have the slightly laid back Sonus Faber sound, they are better with a faster and more “forward” amp. They will play loud, and put out impressive bass, but they need a little more push and control in the higher regions. So I think the PA-1s shine here because they are a different sounding amp, but also because they are a really good different sounding amp.
I was listening to vinyl and cd, mostly 80s stuff, plus some newer selections like Alt-J and Lorde, and classics like Led Zeppelin and Neil Young. I look forward to playing some classical too, but I haven’t gotten to that yet.
What about the XPA-1L? Well I got my unit back and started a comparison. I found that when working properly they still sound really good, they have a powerful “live” sound to them I think. What I mean is like the kind of great sound you experience at a live performance. It has presence but is colored by the venue, the sound engineering, and the type of music on offer. I realized this while playing U2’s 360 degrees tour Blu-Ray. In back and forth testing, I liked the XPA-1Ls better. This was at higher volumes and the Edge’s guitar work in particular has real heft and draws you in to the rock melody. This is the only occasion that I found the PA-1s to sound “bright, thin, sterile” etc, a common complaint in Class-D applications.
The same thing was true playing the first several tracks of Lorde’s Pure Heroine CD. While doing this comparison, no sub was being used for some of the time, and during this the bolder sound and greater bass of the XPA-1Ls prevailed. BUT, when crossed over to the sub properly, I think the win goes to the PA-1s, whose precise transparent top and mid balanced with a fast a deep sub (JL Audio Dominon 110 is very good value) the sound is just elevated considerably.
The rest if the time, at lower volumes on music and TV, these amps continue to surprise me. The cliche of a component making the fun come back applies here for me!
My plan is to swap the 1Ls for the 100s in the garage where their greater power into 4ohms can be taken advantage of, until they quit which is a concern.
Please let me know what you guys think of all this. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
