I think that my Oppo UDP-205 player is slowly fading away into the sunset. So far, I've noticed the following:
1. Some of the unbalanced 7.1 analog outputs are no longer working. The left front channel will still output a test tone generated by the Oppo, but the center channel and right front outputs are dead 2. The S/PDIF coaxial output is intermittent. It will send signal when streaming from its Ethernet input, but when playing a movie or audio disc, the socket is dead 3. The main analog outputs (both balanced and unbalanced) occasionally send highly distorted audio that can only be repaired by a total reboot of the player
The above being the case, it's time to replace this unit. Things that are important in a replacement unit:
Ability to play all video formats including MKV 7.1 analog audio outputs 4K HDR capabilities
Other things that I'd like to have but aren't absolutely necessary include:
Ethernet streaming Balanced audio outputs Universal regional capability
What brands and models should I be looking at?
Thanks - Boomzilla

Panasonic and maybe Pioneer.
By the way, if you decide to toss the 205, let me know. I know a couple of friends who may (or may not) be able to fix some of these items. Worth a shot before sending it to the dump.

Oppo offers a repair service for a really reasonable price, check with them before you ditch you unit. They repaired my 95 and the service was fast and was $119 plus shipping to them, they pay return shipping. An Out of Warranty Repair for the BDP-95 will cost $119.00 plus shipping to us. This fee will cover all parts, labor, and return shipping to North American addresses. You can purchase an Out of Warranty Repair Service at: www.oppodigital.com/proddetail.asp?prod=RSBDP95

I would agree with seeking a repair through Oppo. Only the Panasonic DP-UB9000 will give you most of what you are looking for and, as an owner of one, I can tell you that it doesn’t come without warts of its own. Get the most life out of your 205 that you can...

I forgot about the repair service.
You would also have to pay shipping to them.
As to new players....the closest "replacement" for the 205 would be the Panasonic DP-UB9000 ($999)
The Panasonic DP-UB820 may or may not suffice. It does have 7.1 audio outputs.
These players do not do SACD however.

Closed for the next 3 weeks (or more) for COVID-19 avoidance. I'll have to live with the problems for the time being.

I'm surprised it's having so many issues...it's so young!

I'm surprised it's having so many issues...it's so young! Mark It hasn't been quite right from the beginning. I didn't notice it too much at first because I didn't use all of the functions. But over time, I've tried just about every option on the thing, and have noticed that stuff is slowly just beginning to work occasionally, and eventually not work at all (wife says the same thing about me...).

LOL! Your wife is a trooper to stick with you. Did she have to send you in for warranty work like mine did? Your comment on it not being right from the beginning reminds me of how warranties are really meant to deal with "manufacturing" defects, not "wear-out" defects. Sounds like your had some MFG-in defects of some type. Of course, the people that sell extended warranties don't what us to know about that and the Weibull Distribution. Mark
