Hi there, I have been looking at the Emotiva A-300 amplifier, I currently have an Adcom 545ii and was looking to upgrade. Would the A-300 be a noticeable difference in sound? I've really been impressed with the A300 specs, just wanted to see if it would be worth the plunge if what I already have in my system is better or if it's close to being the same. Thanks!

A300 would be way cool then. Good sounding amplifier to complement the T Zeros. Ideal!

Do you think it would be a better option than my Adcom?

I have own Adcom amps and they are to forward sounding for my taste. I prefer Rotel amps. Having said that, at one time I had an Adcom 545, Rotel 936 and an Emotiva UPA-500 and the Emotiva was my favorite out of those three.

Yes, I agree there definitely is a lot of forwardness to the Adcom for sure. I have heard a lot of great things about Rotel amps...very balanced sound...

Ultimately your ears will tell where the magic is. All these amps are fine choices. I sold Rotel for over 10 years and liked what they did. The RB-1090 is still in my top 10 favorite amps of all time. I use to kid it was too good for a Rotel. It was very musical and powerful, and did not carry itself like other amps I heard. I had a friend with one. His setup was very nice, and I liked it. The RB-1090 and his Naim CD player were the stars of the show. The CD player I could skip, but if I had a chance to get an RB-1090. Yeah would be very happy. The A-300 is very well received, and getting this kind of power for so little? Have fun trying to beat this. For brand new with a 3 year warranty, it is a must buy if it makes sense to you. Your other gear may come and go, but a great Amplifier and Speakers are timeless.

Yes, I totally agree.. for the price it is definitely hard to beat. So I pulled the trigger on the A300 and so far, I am totally impressed! Very clean and clear sound. I was really surprised at the difference I heard. It still has to break in but so far so good, and no problem with the fans yet either, I've read that they are a problem for some but I don't generally listen at very high volume. The amp pairs nicely with my T Zero's.

The A-300 will offer a more refined sound but the Adcom will most likely sound more dynamic or bigger. The speakers you own is a huge determining factor and how you like to listen to your music.

I'm a little late to the party here but I have an Adcom GFA 5500 for sale if you haven't done anything yet. That was the last amp Nelson Pass designed for Adcom and uses MOSFET output transistors instead of their normal bipolars. MOFETs are known for their tube like sound. It's a powerful, sweet sounding amp.

This is a no-brainer. Adcom is now out of business. When it breaks (not if), there's no factory service and no available parts. You may get the local electronics repair shop to fix it, but they might not (MOSFET stuff is definitely different). And it doesn't matter if GOD designed it, if it isn't working then it's a boat anchor.
The A-300 comes with a warranty, sounds GREAT, and is a durable amplifier.
I don't even see a shadow of doubt on this choice.
I post this not for the OP, but for anyone in the future facing a similar choice.

If you are lucky you can get a schematic for the old stuff from them if they have it. I have an Adcom GFA-5200 that failed in one channel and I gave it to an EE friend of mine as a "brain exercise" and challenge to repair. He is working through it. Go for the Emotiva amp.

I don't know if it's a revived brand by new owners or what but there is an operating Adcom audio company. www.adcom.com. I was actually in contact with them recently about a couple of their newer designs.

The "new Adcom" does not support former Adcom equipment, to the best of my knowledge. So although there is another company, now named "Adcom," it is fair to say that (the original) Adcom is out of business.

I recently sold my Adcom 555 with the preamp. It was great but I enjoy my A300 with the TA100 as a preamp much better. I’m sure newer caps/pots on the a300 are the reason as the Adcom was still in original form from the 80’s.
Either way, the sound signature of the Emotiva is more to my taste.

I am retired and have enjoyed audio for many many years. My Adcom preamp/tuner and power amp were purchased new thirty years ago and although running fine I began worrying about the amplifiers lack of speaker protection. My Polk srs sda 2 speakers would be a major loss to me if the amp blew. As Boom said it will fail not if but when. After looking at the outrageous prices of today’s audio gear I was drawn to Emotiva. I bought the BasX A-300 and the PT-100 to replace my Adcom and was amazed by the improvement in sound. After thirty years of listening to the same gear you get used to the sound and the Emotiva preamp and power amp brought a new clarity and sound stage that the Adcom lacked. In short I love the new sound and spend more time listening to my old tunes without worrying about a 30 year old amp destroying my precious speakers.

I recently replaced an old nad preamp and older Mitsubishi power amp (150watt/channel dual monoblock) with the basx a-300 and pt-100 combo as well for a relative. I too thought this was a major upgrade for his system. Cheers.

“Forward Sounding”
I continue to hear this descriptive phrase tossed around here and in other threads......
Anyone want to take a shot at EXACTLY what that entails. For the life of me, it makes no sense whatsoever.
