I've got a Magnepan 1.7 (no 'i') that still plays, but at maybe 1/2 the volume as the other. I've checked the pre-amp via headphones and all is well there. I switched the newer BJC Speaker cable to my old monoprice 12ga. with Emo bananas and...BINGO! I am SO f#&*ing happy! What I still don't get is, why low volume if the cable failed? Anywho . . . thanks, everybody, for all your help. This place is my favorite web attraction.

Sounds like the panel is bad. I had some MMGs that did that. You have to replace the panel most likely. Sorry to deliver the bad news. I hope it all works out.

I don't know anything about the Magnepans, but have you disconnected the speakers and put an ohmmeter across the +/- terminals to see if they are the same? I had a speaker whose capacitors went bad in the crossover that made one speaker's resistance read very low when compared to the good one. Just a thought.

I would check all the connections carefully.
I don't recall how Maggies are actually fabricated... but a loose connection between an input lead and the panel itself can cause that sort of problem. (Specifically check the areas where the incoming wires attach to the panel itself... where the wire makes contact with the foil trace on the plastic.)

If needed, you can get a rebuild kit very reasonably from Magnepan, and there are rebuild videos on Youtube.
A 1.7 isnβt that old- is in sunlight; do you drive it maybe too hard?

Perhaps you tried this already, but I'll throw it there anyways. Have you swapped the panels around to make sure its the panel and something upstream in the system?

Bill 8 years old, NO direct sun; in the same room as my guitars & upright bass (45-50% humidity), general listening level in the 75 - 90db range, never had them to 100db and never had the XPA-2 in the red dot zone for more than a 1/2 note. π

Thank You all, for your responses. Very much appreciated.π I have ZERO technical skills but I guess I'll just have to remove the sock and have a look around.β‘ You Tube, here I come, what could possibly go wrong?πππππ₯

Thanks Keith, are you referring to the speaker wire, or an internal wire on the speaker?

Internal, I think.

...switched the newer BJC Speaker cable to my old monoprice 12ga. with Emo bananas and...BINGO! I am SO f#&*ing happy! What I still don't get is, why low volume if the cable failed? - George Hi George - Your speakers have a pretty low impedance to start with (4 Ohms). If a speaker wire has a bad connection, is corroded, or is exceptionally long, then the resistance of the wire (seen in series with the speaker) becomes significant. This is why many on the Lounge ( DYohn comes to mind) prefer hooking up their speakers with bare wire - no spades, no bananas, no chance of bad connections. If you cut the connector (banana plug?) off your "bad" speaker wire, I'd bet that the Maggies would play fine. So the first thing to suspect on any "bad" speaker wire is the connector. If you have an aversion (like I do) to using bare wires, then the next best thing is to use BlueJeans cable wires. They sonically WELD the connectors onto their wires, and unless you step on a connector and break the weld, then they're FAR more durable than any soldered terminal. Glad you got "your speaker fixed!" Boom

FIRST? Any way to check out the 'Suspect' cable with an ohm meter BEFORE simply chopping off connectors and / or reterminating? Also, Magnepan connects from the crossover TO the panel with push-on connectors. The Crossover itself is hard-soldered. The connections to the FUSE holder will be screws / nuts and ring connectors. THAT is a possible place for a bad connections. While you are at it? OHM OUT the fuse. It is probably a low-value fuse....maybe 4 amps? which maybe difficult to see if good / bad. CHECK IT. Maggie either needs a banana connector, of which the 'expanding' type sold by BJC gets my vote....I've got 8 of them in-service now for a decade or so. OR find a banana adaptor.....LINK is to the CARDAS site which is probably going to melt your credit card, but is a good example of what you may end up with.... www.cardas.com/parts_bananas.phpYou could ALSO unscrew the panel on the back of the speaker and modify THAT with spade connectors......that is, if you are tired of Banana plugs.....
