Will a subwoofer (RS13?) added to 4s monitors leave a gaping frequency/balance hole?
Upon first listen of my Stealth 8s, I almost immediately put my Velodyne on Craigslist. I recently pulled the 4s out of the closet and I'm enjoying them (somewhat) in an open basement. With a 4.5" driver, of course it's going to lack the full spectrum of sound. Will they still sound like a small speakers after adding the subwoofer or will they meet seamlessly in the middle? I have no experience with small speakers + sub.
I should add that the speakers and sub will be through the DC-1, so no fancy room correction is available.

I use the Stealth 8 as main (no center) and the 4s as side surround duty. A couple of days ago when I was futzing around, I set my pair of 4ses in the front and listened to them with and without a sub. They sounded great but, you’re right, no match for the Stealth 8. I feel you need a minimum of a 6.5” mid bass driver in a two-way design to enjoy a full on soundstage.

I use a 10” subwoofer with the 4’s in my home office, cross over around 80 hz works just fine, as expected.

IMO they're still going to sound small in an open basement. The sub would still improve them, and better if you have bass management. I have mine in a loft with a small sub, but wish I had the 5S, as good as they sound. I needed the smaller footprint when I got them.

I think two of the S8 subs may be a better fit than a RS13, the RS13 sub is a very nice sub I'm sure but not sure if it's music you are mainly listening to it may be better to use two of the S8 subs, if you go too big of a sub even though I mostly recommend larger driver subs the 4s might have a harder time keeping up with the output of a very large sub, maybe a couple of 12" or 10" subs from SVS may be an even better option.

To be blunt, 4’s (and 5’s) are near field monitors, that’s what they are engineered to do. They are not designed for open room listening at normal (TV watching) distances. They can do it of course but it’s not what they are intended for. Having owned, plus installed a number of pairs of 4’s, 5’s and 6’s I wouldn’t use anything less than a 6 or an 8 for use as TV watching speakers. With or without a sub.

I used to set my 6s up on my Sanus stands in my room and they worked fine and sounded amazing, I haven't really done that with my 5s so I can't comment on them as I use them nearfield on my desk.

I have two Airmotiv 4s monitors on each side of my main computer screen in the dining room. On the floor beneath the desk that is just inches to the left of the left speaker is my Mirage Omni S8 powered sub. No longer for sale but 5 star rating from Crutchfield. WOW!, pretty much says it. BTW, Stereophile loved them! Sub sounds great and blends in with the 4S's very smoothly. These are for my tower with large screen on the dining room wall. It is in the middle of an open great room Kitchen/Dining/Living room, 13 x 40, carpeted. I use it when listening to CD's from my tower or YouTube music when on the computer or many times just for music enjoyment when I don't care to turn on my main Emotiva Reference HT system in the living room. Connected thru a Belkin PC and my Emotiva XDA-2. The 4s's are set to max volume and I control the volume with the XDA-2. I have the 4s's EQ shelving dials on the back set to +2dB for HF and -4dB for LF. The Mirage S8 I have set to; phase switch 0 degrees, level control to 12 o'clock and the frequency filter (crossover) on and set to 85Hz.
Can this system match my main system at entertaining the entire condo complex with AC/DC --- NO! However, IMO this is one great little system (Airmotiv 4s) and would supply many folks with a enjoyable sound all by itself. Adding a high quality 8" sub like I did brings this to a whole different level, and it plays low folks! My neighbors are sleeping now but tomorrow I'll take a dB sound level check from the other side of the dining room. For me it plays satisfyingly loud when I want to enjoy some fairly high sound levels. I enjoy it both nearfield and at normal distances. This system is and has been a no-brainer serious keeper since I bought it. I Highly recommend adding a quality small sub!
FYI: Mirage Omni S8: bass-reflex (ported) enclosure 100-watt RMS amplifier 8" front-firing woofer with patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround™ frequency response 27-120 (±3dB) front-panel controls include volume, crossover, phase, and filter mode continuously variable 40-120 Hz crossover
