Hello Emo fans, As I wait for my upgrade to arrive, I consider my options. The original plan was to wait a while. Then I found a great deal on a pair of ceiling speakers that will match my existing ceilings so, game on. Currently I'm running Paradigm Studio 100 v5 up front with a CC-690 between them. I use the ADP 590 v5 in the surround position and ceiling speakers are CI Pro 65 as rears I'm going to use my James EMB-1500 for LFE center channel located behind the electronics rack. I also will have a pair of 12" subs at left and right front as dual-mono. I'm running a Sherbourne 7/2100 for surrounds and Emotiva XPA-5 for the front main three. I guess I'll lose bi-amping my front stereo pair but everything is a trade off, for now.
Ceiling is vaulted about 13' and the rear of the room is open to a large kitchen/eating area. What I think I want to do is use my ceiling rears as top rear overhead. They are actually located about three feet behind & above the listening position. I'll add two new ceiling speakers about half way between the listening position and the front mains. My front mains are about 10' from my listening position so the front ceiling high speakers would be about five feet in front on listening position. I have a pair of Studio 10 v5 that I will add as my new rear surrounds on stands and the ADP's which are adjacent to the listening position will still be surrounds. I hope that's not confusing. Am I missing anything? This Atmos thing is very new to me. I am learning.

After the two new ceiling speakers - the Front Tops - you'll have a 5.2.4 system? Or do you have side surrounds also? Just so you understand where I'm coming from on this, I'm in the camp of - Whatever your room will allow. So if something can't be done by the book, it's still better than nothing. The way I understand ATMOS speaker placement, going strictly by Dolby's guidelines for the moment, the Tops would be about the same spread left to right as the Front Mains L&R, and any Surrounds and/or Backs would be more "outboard" - meaning more spread apart, wider spacing. Is this what you're intending on doing?

I have the ADP's as surrounds adjacent to the listening position. so, that makes 7. Then there are three subs. One at the center sub position LFE only and two as dual mono set to ~ 80hz, so that makes 7 in surround positions and 4 in the ceiling, two are 5 feet in front of the LP and two are 3 feet behind the LP so that why I called it a 7.3.4 Atmos system.

Am I missing anything? This Atmos thing is very new to me. I am learning. David Sounds like we have a lot in common - see the Airmotive A1 Airspace post - I have some pictures there. Just heard from Kayla, my XMC-2 is almost ready. They are sending my 'return ticket' later today. I have decided to use the A1's (if I can ever get another pair; have one pair already) as my overhead speakers. I am going to try mounting them directly on the sloped ceiling, with their 'slope' in the opposite direction. I am going to use Dolby's 7.1.4 Overhead guide's angles to determine placement on the ceiling. Ultimately this will find these speakers aimed at the opposite side 'listening position'. All 4 of my Surrounds sit are mounted 5 feet from the floor - I really didn't have any choice. They actually do very well in 7.2 surround. I think my system sounds pretty damn good! Making use of the ceiling height will put those 'Overhead' speakers well above the Surrounds. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it all works. Adding Dirac room correction to adjust levels should only help. Lol! I am also with you on that 'learning' thing!
