In the future, perhaps Emotiva's premier product will be a table radio. Macintosh has their versions. My 40 year old table radio still works, and never needs a reboot. How is it with 4k Dolby Vision and Atmos movies? I bet it's very ... sTable 😊

How is it with 4k Dolby Vision and Atmos movies? About as well as my RMC-1L when it's having it's monthly... Jus pounding the sTable a bit here. I did mention here, almost a couple of years ago, that the primary competition for these processors IS a table radio. When they function as well as a table radio, it will be a major accomplishment. The industry is at fault for keeping processors at a geek level, with their current level of insTability; one that mostly only people like us can handle.

And another Podcast without any information about the progress with the FW, the new HDMI Board etc. Wish you all a good weekend. Thanks for the heads up. Guess I won’t need to listen to the podcast:). If you're not interested in the A-Series and the upcoming show in Austin - nope - safe your time. I'm waiting for the day when the successor of the RMC-1/L/XMC-2 Line is announced and the current are no longer developed
This is my personal FW history since I have my RMC-1 - 3 years now - and unfortunately still not all problems solved. and Yes - I'm still on 2.3 - as this runs stable for my usage.

Presumably still on FW V1.000 🙃 Old adage ‘do it once, do it right’ emo isn’t an orphan when it comes to extended waits for FW revisions, knowing another (0,0,255) firm who have a several year plan just to catch up to a years long user features (& fixes). And surprise, won’t publish any listing of plans, even though most have been user requests. Quality - usability - price - pick just two.

How is it with 4k Dolby Vision and Atmos movies? I should have mentioned this before in my previous response - Our RMC-1L's have nothing to do with 4K Dolby Vision other than pass-through. The only video the RMC manipulates is the OSD. When and if a new RMC video board is produced, will it do anything different or better than bypassing the RMC entirely by using something like a HDFury VRROOM; which we already know works well? Perhaps Emo should collaborate with HDFury about a video card upgrade. That would make good sense - sTable video, sTable audio, sTable processor. With OSD? What's not to like?

If we took that stand with each device that was the fault of some issue we'd quickly run out of electronics and go back to the tube radios some of us remember from way back. No, I for one will just work with what I have. My issue arose this week because of the want for a longer cable which I knew needed to be active and would be better if it were fiber, so I bought a very good cable. I believe there still may be a setting on the tv that could help, but I just need to dig a little. Emotiva will probably come up with something that will fool devices like my tv into being less impetuous. But until then, I'm ok with what I've already discovered. Now, there is an issue that my new HDMI cable has almost completely solved. And that is a digital static and digital tone that happens when using TiVo skip features. It happens when the video is jumbled from using Instant Replay or Fast Forward, etc, and when the video is stabilizing these noises occur, but only when using Dolby Audio setting on the TiVo. Again with the TiVo! But this one probably is TiVo's fault. I guess I might have to test these things using my projector this weekend to nail down if the problems follow the display or not. I own a 2016 LG and it has an option for faster turn on- forget what they call it, but it keeps the TV in a higher powered standby that turns it on faster. The Sony might have a similar setting to try. You might also try putting the Tivo in 'standby' mode when turning off. I don't remember if you use a universal remote, but I can turn off (put into standby immediately-not having to wait for 2or4 hr auto shut down) both my Roamio and Bolt when the system is shut down. They wake up with a 'enter/select' command when I want to watch them. I turn off CEC on all components and use the universal remote. Knowing you, you will figure this out (if possible). Just a couple of thoughts. In my experience always turning off these high power standby modes for HDMI devices does increase stability. As well as network on standby which pretty much has to keep the device at some form of high power standby. Usually the device that causes most problems in a setup is some kind of TV box.. They often keep their connection even if in standby and most of the times does not follow HDMI standards. Ever since I turned off CEC in my dish box and set it in to low power standby mode everything with RMC-1 has been ultra stable generally. It does take a couple of minutes to get the dish box to get picture/sound and check the account and card id every time I start it. But I don’t care. I’d rather have a stable system than having issues with the sync and other devices. Sometimes it can be streaming boxes also. But in my experience AppleTV and Shield Pro does not cause any issues with the right setup, both in them and in your TV. Of course using CEC is a gamble. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. In my setup it works for some devices but causes issues for other. So I don’t use it. I have another TV (kitchen) which has only a AppleTV connected to it. Here CEC works wonderfully. AppleTV both turns on and off the TV automatically. Works every time. Also changing volume works as expected through CEC here.

Are we approaching a year since the last software update? When did Emotiva stop saying anything about updates to us owners? No. Emotiva released v2.5 in January. When they realized they are losing in the market. To not be able to sell out of these units during Covid means it’s not a desired product in the marketplace. I think the lack of communication means the beginning of the end for these processors.

However the discussions here regards the vendors silence as to various issues discussed there caused me to go with another vendor. Not my first choice but seemed a safer choice.

We do not formally ANNOUNCE firmware updates... Although we do often mention them in the newsletter.
Every firmware update is NOT considered to be mandatory... so we do not expect people to always update and install the latest one..
Many people do NOT update to every new firmware version when it comes out.
However, for those who prefer to do so, the latest released version is always available here:

COMMUNICATION is a STRONG SUIT. YOU are destroying EMO's customer base, and EMO's reputation, with 'All Hat and no Cattle' comments like you just made. WE all know that FW 2.5 is just a small tweak to get all the processors on the same page, and minimize update problems when a REAL update comes - An update that YOU described, several months ago, as coming SOON. An update that should offer REAL sTability to EMO's processors, and address REAL concerns of patiently waiting and frustrated CUSTOMERS. Some REAL communication is in order. SIR.

I’m on the latest firmware for my XMC-2 and it’s been completely “stable”. I don’t really think about new updates at this point. I haven’t had to hard reboot for any reason in a very long time. I’m also using VRO. This is not to defend the length of time between firmware updates and of course I’m looking forward to system improvements, but I’m happy with my unit and its current performance. If/when Emotiva comes out with a new line of processors, I will certainly consider them.

If/when Emotiva comes out with a new line of processors, I will certainly consider them. Well, of a all highend processors or AVRs Emotiva’s has the least features and/or formats supported. For me my RMC-1 is working pretty stable. Sound quality is great.. What’s bad is the extremely slow response to everything. Still miss having some things. Some features that are in the processors are limiting. Even those, while probably not a huge coding job extending, aren’t being done. If users request a feature, even extremely small ones, it’s never even considered by Emotiva (it seems). Also when something needs being fixed they don’t release fixes. You’ll have to wait for the ”next big” release. Then the ”no communication” policy of the past years aren’t helping. One of my reasons for buying Emotiva was the ”hands on” communication and talking openly in the forums. Yes, missing release dates happens. People will complain if it happens too often. But IMO that’s not a reason for not to communicate. The best products are those were the producers are actively talking and responding to their customers IMO.

In a 5.1 system you have surrounds and NOT back-surrounds. Even if you have one pair of surrounds, and they are in the back, they are "surrounds".
This is an industry-standard convention - on our processors and on every other processor I've ever seen.
In fact you will be UNABLE to configure the processor to have rear surrounds unless you first configure it to have surrounds.
And you don't ever want to configure a processor tho think it has speakers that aren't connected.
Both because tests like Dirac may fault when they try to test those speakers; and because sound will be routed to "the speakers that aren't there".
Please help me settle a dispute with a brother. When setting up a 5.1 system. Should the rear speakers be plugged in as "Surrounds" or "Rears", Right and Left. I think the RMC1L has the "Rears" marked as "Back" or RBK & LBK? We use, "All Stereo", DTS, Dolby Digital and occasionally Surround sources. Thank you In a 5.1 system, set your side/back speakers as 'Surrounds'. DTS and Dolby will decode properly. Set your angle for taste, and your room, but standard is 120 degrees. I don't know if the RMC-1L will set surrounds as backs in a 5.1 setup. It shouldn't.

TiVo / No Sink / XMC-2 Lockup First off, my apologies to Sony for me claiming the Sony tv was the culprit.
Please let me re-state what the problem actually is. The XMC-2 will lockup when TiVo is the selected Input, and the tv has been turned off for a short period of time, usually 15 minutes or more, and a fiber optic HDMI cable is used, or, there is no display at all. The only source I have that causes this issue in my system is a TiVo EDGE. The TiVo is on 24/7. When there is no display “sensed” by the TiVo, the XMC-2 will eventually lockup.
These combinations will cause the lockup: TiVo On 24/7, XMC-2 On or in VRO, No Display connected to XMC-2. TiVo On 24/7, XMC-2 On or in VRO, Dispay connected via Fiber Optic HDMI Cable but Display is turned off.
When copper HDMI cables are used, lockup never happens when the display is turned off for 15 minutes or more. So it appears that TiVo has a problem when there is no display sensed.
I am leaning towards thinking the issue at hand here is “HDCP Lockup”. HDCP Lockup is something that can arise when a recording device is in a system and unexpected circumstances arise that aren't accounted for.
I want to use VRO so I can watch general tv shows without using the whole system. So for me, the simplest way to avoid lockup is to change inputs from TiVo to any other input before turning off the display. I wasn’t able to find another way around this, but still want to use the long Fiber Optic HDMI cable needed to reach where the components will be moved to, so changing inputs prior to turning off the tv is what I'll do.
I've read a lot this week about HDMI and HDCP. It's so complicated that it's a miracle we can watch video at all these days. The folks that write HDMI White Papers are not surprised that conflicts arise, and in fact, 1 in 7 system configurations are expected to have conflicts, and this estimate is from 2012 and things got way more complicated five years later.
I suspect that Emotiva knows what this issue is, but there's probably not an elegant way to work with what the TiVo wants. I did discover that if I kept pressing the input button on the remote for TiVo (HDMI 1) every few minutes, it would keep the XMC-2 from locking up. So maybe Emotiva can code a repeater somewhere. HDCP is repeated every couple seconds, so . . . . .

I don't know if the RMC-1L will set surrounds as backs in a 5.1 setup. It shouldn't. There are three things we were talking about and you certainly should be addressing EmoCertain; not me. One is convention. Two is position. Three is routing. One – we have no disagreement about convention. Read what I wrote. Two – position could be anywhere, though reason should prevail – side, back - but should certainly follow convention for best results; convention/position has a range. Room limitations will apply. But, even Floyd Toole suggests position experimentation for taste and to fit the room – see his Sound Reproduction book and find the reference. Also see his own system. IIRC, Toole set his Surrounds at about 70 deg. He doesn’t follow position precisely. Three – routing was something I wasn’t quite sure about. I didn’t recall what the RMC-1L would do. I ended my post by writing that surrounds shouldn’t be able to be routed as backs. I’m glad that EMO and the RMC don’t allow silly things like this. IIRC, Doc offered the Dolby room layout pics in response to EmoCertain. Good pics for convention and position. BTW. In my 7.2.6 system, I position my surrounds at 60 deg. I position the backs at 120 deg. This works very well with 5.1 DTS movie discs that I configure for 7.1. Nicely immersive. Works very well for all 7.1 movie discs, configured or actual, without a need for Wides. Also, with a quick and simple patch, I can route the Surround signals to the Back amps (no pops with balanced connections) and get perfect 120 deg convention and position for the Surround channels on 5.1 music discs. My room Surround-Back setup is a slight compromise with some ATMOS music. I don't use Dirac. Thanks for looking to the rear and finding a post of mine you felt comfortable enough to address.

Unfortunately, your unit needs to boot before you can perform a factory reset. If you have unplugged it from the main power and waited ~15 minutes before repowering, then there's nothing more than can be done if it's not completing the boot. If it were me, and if it were convenient, I would call tech support rather than waiting for an email response. They're sometimes a bit slow with the latter... Thanks. I actually heard back from them pretty quickly and unfortunately it sounds like it will need to be serviced. Also, although it was in a quality surge protector, simple power outage can cause problems (what is one to do other than maybe ensure it’s in UPS as well)? Will provide an update when I have one. Thanks for the input and have a good weekend. Quick update - I shipped my rmc out for repair on Monday and got it back on Saturday. I must say that I am truly impressed with the level of customer support and communication that Emotiva (Brent) provided. I don’t say this often, but I really could not have asked for a better response or service. Sure, we all get frustrated with certain issues/bugs that we are facing, lack of info on firmware updates, etc. but it is really valuable to know that the level of customer support that we receive when there is an unforeseen issue/problem is top notch. Very happy with how things have been handled and now I just have to hope that all continues to run smoothly. As I said before, make sure you plug it into a gfci outlet if you can (and avoid VRO if feasible) to minimize your risk. A+ to Emotiva for their level of customer support.
