You bought the Enotiva processor for the sound... my take is finish the job and use "real" height speakers... in the end it will be worth it

Ceiling unless you for some reason can't run cable.

I tried the A-1s on top of my main speakers in reflecting mode and while it made a difference I wasn't satisfied so I moved them up to the wall/ceiling boundary. Much better. I'd say go ceiling.

I’m torn between the a1 upward firing atmos speakers or the new vaulta in ceiling. Any suggestions? You have only to remember that upward firing loudspeakers were born out of necessity when it became clear that overheads were impractical or impossible for many end users for a number of reasons. This thread link: www.avforums.com/threads/atmos-crossover-setting.2140833/is yet another example of what should be considered when getting upward firing systems to integrate as seamlessly as possible, provided your not dealing with a vaulted ceiling that’s too high to make it work effectively. Upward firing are for old guys like me who aren't into HT at nearly the level I once was...I have a great Samsung sound bar with 2 side firing speaker and 2 up firing speaker included and 2 wireless rear channels w/ up firing speakers does it sound good? Actually I would call it a "satisfying" experience BUT up firing speakers are in no way as good as direct/discrete channels. So if you can, mount them puppies! Not to mention go to a Dolby Cinema and you will see no speaker tops!

My ceiling is my roof, it's a cathedral ceiling. Plus, being a small house, the roof is built with 2x8's so there is no chance I can cut holes for speakers and properly insulate. So my speakers are mounted to the ceiling and the wires run exposed.

If you have the access and ability to install in-ceiling speakers, it is definitely worth the effort, you will appreciate the end results!
