Something was brought to my attention that opened up my thinking on how we can use the speaker setups on our G3P (Gen3 Processors). Thanks AudioHTIT ! He uses the Front Width:: Bi Amp Front channels for a separate 2 channel setup. This got me to thinking about using a feature like this in my setup.
For daily tv watching I normally keep the processor in Video Remains On Standby (VRO). Old tv shows don’t need my entire system operating, especially the tube amps which I reserve for when sound matters.
So I’ve got 2 tube mono amps for my Main Left/Right Martin Logan speakers, a 5 channel amp - 3 channels of which that can be used for Center and Wides, and an 8 channel amp for 4 Surrounds and 4 Tops. So this would be a 9.2.4 setup at its maximum.
Let’s say that I choose to use Preset-1:Dirac-1-Slot (P1D1) for a 9.2.4 setup. This would include Front Width:: Sm Front Width channels using floor standing speakers set to Small. The Wides would be a little bit out of place, but close enough, so that the room doesn’t look terrible, and in addition so I can use those speakers in another way. This would be a great HT system and a lot of fun!
Then, for Preset 2, I can have a different usage of the Front Width channels - Bi Amp Front. This would be for a couple of 7.2.4 setups. One which uses the Martin Logan speakers and tube amps, and the other which uses some old floor standing Boston Acoustic speakers and the solid state amp. P2D1 it would be used for two channel music via the Martin Logans and tube amps only, but I don’t see any point of not calibrating all the speakers available and this helps to be more versatile, and frankly, this is what I’m using right now for my system setup. Also, the Martin Logans are set as Large and I use Reference Stereo so the subs are not active. Dirac Slot P2D2 would be for the Boston Acoustics as the mains speakers, and this is what would be used for 7.2.4 day to day tv watching.
To calibrate each pair of main speakers - Fronts and Front Width - independently, I just need to turn off their respective amps, or in the case of the multi-channel solid state amp I’d need to unplug the cables to the Bi Amped Bostons so I can still calibrate the Center channel.
Also need to configure the amp triggers per input so the right speakers are on for the right content.
So there you have it, 3 calibrations in 2 Presets for all the speakers I have available. Just think, I scoffed at the idea back in the 1990’s of ever getting a center channel speaker! Now I have to bring up the Bostons from the basement.
Are there other creative ways to use the system to your advantage?
