Just contemplating one of these scenarios for a LCR. Speakers are Dynaudio Contour S3.4 and Contour SCX which are all 4 ohms. I've always been told the more headroom the better and on paper the DR3's have oodles (600 watts RMS, per channel, all three channels driven). And in addition, wouldn't the DR3 with its Differential Referenceā¢ Amplifier Modules be the perfect match for my XMC-2 with its Audiophile grade AKM4490 Verita DACs (operating in fully balanced Mono mode for the three front main channels)?
Or would this be overkill compared to a 3 x PA-1s a measly 270w?
Speaker handling power:
Dynaudio Contour S3.4 IEC Long Term Power Handling: < 270 watts
Contour SCX IEC Long Term Power Handling: < 300 watts

Speaker handling power: Dynaudio Contour S3.4 IEC Long Term Power Handling: < 270 watts Contour SCX IEC Long Term Power Handling: < 300 watts I have both a DR-2 upstairs off of my RMC-1 and I have three PA-1s down stairs running off of my Marantz SR5010 (so source is not apples to apples). 1st thing is the PA-1s really punch well above their price point. I drive a pair of Martin Logan Theos speakers with them and they preform perfectly. I bought the PA-1s because of a space limitation in the living room cabinet (depth) and the wife was not going to let me cut a hole in the back of that cabinet. But upstairs on my RMC-1 with the DR-2 amp its another level of music quality. The amp is so strong and you can just feel how effortlessly it pushes my Mirage OMD-28's with music. It just seems like its on another level from the PA-1's (and it should at the cost delta). Once again the source and room have a lot to do with this as well. I really like my PA-1's and for $900 for the three they are a great value. They are also fully balanced like the DR-3 so you do not lose that. But for a primary system I would say if the cost does not kill you get the DR-3 since you will never have a question if you have enough amp.

Would be an interesting comparison if you swapped the receivers around, the RMC-1 would be a huge factor! I know when I went from a Rotel processor to the XMC-1 it was night and day, and now the XMC-2 is on another level again.

It would be a huge pain to swap the RMC around, but it may not be super hard to move the PA-1s upstairs and run them on the RMC. They are crazy small and it it should be easy to do it. It would be interesting to see if I could hear a difference.

I don't have a DR-3, but I do have two DR-1s for the mains and a THIRTEEN 1.6s that has the single high power module driving the center channel. I don't have the DR-3's power for the center channel and it works very well. The DR-3 will give you plenty, I know you will not be disappointed!
