I have more than a 'feeling' that if you pulled the sock on your panels.....1.7 OR the new LRS, that you could get at the crossover, basically gut it and go to a stereo or, more ot the point, a PAIR of the PA-1 per speaker. Use something like a MiniDSP crossover. You will net an increase in power.....

I run an XPA-3 Gen 2 with a pair of 1.6QR's and it will drive them to ear bleeding levels. I am considering the LRS's because the 1.6's are just a tad too big for living room we are currently in. I have tried my my 1990's Adcom GFA 535II on the maggies and it actually does quite well as long as the room is not huge, and your not trying for metal concert sound pressure levels. However, my older Onkyo 809 receiver chokes trying to drive them even though its rated at twice the power of the little Adcom. It just cant do it. If you can, go for the Magnepan .7. In my experience, the 5Hz or lower that it went in the frequency response, along with slightly larger panels, made for a great sound. Not that the LRS was bad by any means. Also, the .7 really had a better bottom end response when I switched to a Parasound A23+ from a Crown XLS1502 amplifier. Not that I'm giving the nod to Parasound, but rather, the additional current that the class A/B amp could provide over the Crown was where the difference and benefit was. I never tried a Gen 2 amp with the Magnepans, but suspect the results would be good. The 1.7i was too big for my condominium, and I ended up selling those off. Actually, the same guy bought my pair of LRS and .7 speakers, leaving me with the hard upgrade decision, which is why I went for the 1.7i. Then, after realizing how big they were - along with the 3' or so from the wall, I felt like my place was closing in a bit. I listed them, and the same buyer of my LRS and .7 Magnepans, bought the pair of 1.7i speakers, too. Again, in my room and my experience, the .7 was one sweet Magnepan. I'm sure I'd still have them if I didn't have those visions of the 1.7i in my mind. Bigger is not always better - for all rooms.

You MIGHT consider a DWM module with the LRS or the .7 panels. It is NOT a sub but rather a mid-bass panel which really helps the low end without 'booming'. Especially in a larger space. ... www.magnepan.com/DWM_and_DW_1_Woofers

Though I'm not running Maggies, I agree with others in this thread that are running and/or recommend the XPA-2, whether it be a Gen 1, 2 or 3.
Considering what my Gen 2 does for my Martin Logan SL3's, I know these amps would do great with any Maggies as well.

I run my Maggie 3.7's with an XPA-2 gen 1 and have been very pleased with the results.

My PERSONAL disappointment with the X.7 series Magnepan is the inability to biamp without really tearing INTO the speaker, lifting the sock and rewiring. That' SERIES crossover is a PIA....
I have a friend with oroignal 20s.....and he has multiple amps and a Marchand crossover. Visceral Experience and incredible sound. That man has SOME EARS......
