My XPA-5 Gen 1 has started shutting itself down after few minutes or some times after few seconds. In my multiple attempts to restart it, only one time all lights were blinking red and it shut itself down. I have tried the following: - Removed speaker connections one by one, still the problem existed.
- Removed all the interconnects and speaker cables with just power connection only, same result
- Changed the power source from Power conditioner to another outlet, same result. Both the power conditioner and the other outlet are in a dedicated line.
Finally I was going to give up on it. Then I switched the power cable to a completely different outlet and it is working fine again. So far so good. But I am puzzled about XPA-5 Gen 1 being picky about the outlets. What am I missing here? Any thoughts?

I’m no engineer but I hear things from time to time. If it’s sporadic and then works fine for some time it cold be what I’ve heard it called, a bad “cold solder “. The different receptacle working fine may just be a coincidence. Can you get the unit to work fine with an offending speaker disconnected? How long has this been going on?

The different receptacle working fine may just be a coincidence. Can you get the unit to work fine with an offending speaker disconnected? How long has this been going on? I bought this XPA-5 as a refurbished unit from Emotiva eBay store about 3 years back. Last year, it stopped working all of a sudden. Then it started working again automatically. It was working fine until a month ago. I pulled it out of the rack, checked the fuse (no issues) and contacted Emotiva. It would turn on fine with all blue lights but without any sound. I was about to send it to Emotiva. I tested it one more time before boxing it up, randomly it was working fine. So I put it back in the rack last week. Yesterday, I was trying to do DIRAC live and it would shutdown within few minutes of turning on. It took hours before it started working again using another outlet. The behavior of turning itself off started only yesterday. During multiples attempts yesterday, only one time all lights blinked red before shutting itself down. I had to switch it to a completely different outlet to make it work. It worked fine, allowed me to complete the DIRAC LIVE activity as well as a full movie. Hopefully it will continue working today also. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I hate telling you what I’m sure you already know....that amp. has got to go in. The question is; does EMOTIVA service it ? (not sure) and where could you go with it if the answer is no.

I'm having the same issue with my xpa1 going into protection mode. Mirrored everything you did, the guys on the BR forum really helped with their suggestions. Swapped every cable in the system and it still occurs.
Hopefully you kept the box to send it in. Both the xpa1 & 5 are monsters to ship. I'll call technical in the morning in case I (we) missed anything. If we did, I'll shoot you an update.
Best of luck!

This is what I got from Emotiva for a repair. This was on August 5th.
“We can repair the XPA-5 Gen 1 for a flat rate of $285, which covers all parts, labor and return shipping, or since it is out of warranty, you can take to any technician you trust and we can provide schematics.”

If you want to keep the amp, $285 for all that is a good deal.

Trade in value is not huge, but the price of Gen 1 was also less. I don’t remember the exact amount, but take the current $1,599 price add tax and take a few hundred off. Mine needed repair. I figured a new amp with five year warranty at a discount trading in the old one was good for me. My Gen1 was eight years old. Call and ask what your trade in value would be. They will tell you.

I ran through all the tips again with no success. I'm waiting on a callback from EmoTech now.

This is a head scratcher. We decoupled the amp several different ways again trying to get it to go in protection mode, including the power source and amp power cord.
If everything is disconnected and the amp is cold, the amp does not go in protection mode.
We tried different speaker cables to the center channel along with different interconnects. After 30-60 seconds the amp goes in protection mode.
He then had me try a different center channel speaker (I had a nice Polk on the shelf). With the different center channel speaker, the amp does not go in protection mode. So you would think the Mirage OMD-C2 is blown - this is not the case. I hooked it up as a main front speaker and it still kicks azz with awesome highs and lows with no hum, buzz, dead thump etc.... Sounds awesome, great in fact at high volume, I took it up to 80 on the Onk.
When I connect it back as a center channel, it again kicks out the Emo amp again.
How can I have a bad center channel speaker when it still works great???

I'll watch a couple movies this weekend using the Polk center channel. If it does not kick the Emo into protection mode I will call technical back after the holiday.
At this point it is pointing to the OMD-C2 as the trigger for kicking the Emo amp into protection mode.

I took the grill off the center channel OMD-C2 and discovered both sub woofers are not kicking out as they should - everything is coming out of the mid and tweeter. So it is definitely something inside the speaker that is kicking the XPA1 into protection mode. My guess is the speakers crossover is shot. No idea how I'm going to get it fixed/repaired since Mirage Audio is no longer in business. Replace with an upgraded board from Parts Express?

BUT......is the speaker un powered? That is....you connect to an amplifier and it works? If so? Get at and DOCUMENT the wiring of the crossover. Remove and take to a tech to replace the burned parts or even simply start over. Will the manufacturer part with the schematic of the crossover? Easier WITH but not a deal breaker WITHOUT. Post a photo IF the crossover is the offending party. You may ALSO have a burned voice coil in the speaker. That's gonna be a bit more difficult a recovery......Unless you can source the exact same driver...... Were you cranking it up for long time periods?
