Seems like 60deg viewing angle for a first row at 10' and about 40 deg at about 15-16' for the second row.
The room I can create can be 23'-26'. I think I'm going to try to a 23' with a 160" AT screen and 3' space behind the screen to house the speakers and electronics.
Is 160" too ambitious with 2 rows?

I'm about 11.5 feet from my 100", I wouldn't want to be any closer or any bigger of a screen at that distance, especially running 1080p, my buddy has a 4K setup with the same seating distance and his screen is 120" so 160" at 10 feet may be a bit too much haha.

Chad That's about right...my seating is about 11 feet from a 106 inches screen...

I'm currently sitting 13.5' from my 110" with benQ HT1075. I tried moving up to 7' and watched Dark Knight for a bit. It was fine but I only watched it for about 15 minutes like that. The soundstage was driving me crazy.
I am going to be getting a JVC NX5 for the new room

I set about 9 1/2 feet away from a 120" screen with a 1080p projector. It's fine. A couple of justifications are 1) most of the action and emphasis is at the center of the screen anyway, and 2) What's your viewing angle in real life?

IDK, 10' away from a 160" screen is pretty damn close. I see some post here about a 120" screen, but 160" is so much bigger. Its really a tough call since you are doing a custom install, sounds like once you pick the screen size you are kinda married to it.

My setup is pretty similar to mgbpuff and that is about 50 degrees. I don't think it is too large at all, but 60 degrees is pushing it. THX and SMPTE recommendations are around 30-40 degrees. My second row's sound is more enveloping and the picture size is good.
It's all a matter of preference. Some people choose to sit in the front row of a movie theater even when it's not full. As already noted, 160" screen is large. The sharpness/detail for <4k content will not be great and it is problematic to get a bright picture.

Maybe should opt for a smaller screen...maybe 135..this is a tough decision...I could certainly sit closer to my 110" without a problem. I am not one of those people that sits in the front row of a theater...I'm more 1/2 to 2/3 but it's a more of a sound thing and the fact that I am constantly having to look up...
We have an IMAX theater(https://carnegiesciencecenter.org/rangos-giant-cinema/) and it's amazing. I'm not sure what the viewing angle is but it's crazy big and I love it.

....ir maybe I could push back the first row to 12'..it might cause the backrow to be on the back wall though.

Yeah, I wouldn't compromise the back row sound by pushing up against a wall. Go a little smaller.
What projector are you going to use? You'd need over 1100 lumens for 160" screen just to hit the recommended 15ftL for a dark room.

You should multiply the diagonal screen size by 1.5 to get the minimum far away distance, that would be comfortable viewing. Again, that is the minimal distance from screen..
In the case of 160" screen, you will need 240 inches away distance.
I have a 120" screen, and at the minimal distance of I still feel it is overpowering to cover the screen real estate with my eyes.
like someone else has mentioned, you also need to check and see the brightness of the projector, and make sure the image rendered is optimal.

JVC NX5 would do 1100+ calibrated, but I saw a review where the reviewer was only getting 17ftL on a 120" so it still might not be enough.

The more and more I think about it....I'm leaning to not doing a AT screen and taking the extra 3'(making room 26') long. I wanted the clean look for the AT screen but I guess if I have to give up audio quality (ie backrow too close to wall) or a smaller screen...I think it's just not worth it...
