Building on my thread on ways to cover a hole, I've now got a plan and some of the parts in place to handle my job. This is for information sharing only, and anyone providing advice on how to do drywall patching, options to fill the hole, or prevent the hole in the first place will be shot by hoards of airborne droids that fire upon my command. So...please...don't go there. I don't want all the paperwork of dealing with holes in you. (Kidding...but...don't go there...) So, here's my plan...as noted in the other thread - I have a hole in my wall. Taking down my projector screen reminded me of the hole AND I want the hole to remain for easy access to threading more wires as needed (such as speaker lines for Atmos speakers within the year). And, the hole is being (mostly) covered by a new TV. I decided to build some sound panels that cover the hole yet allow me access to the hole when I need it. So, here's my plan. 1) I bought these 12" sound panels. 12" is really 11.75", but...whatever. -->LINK TO SOUND PANELS,__2) I will buy an 8' by 4' Luan panel (1/4" plywood/underlayment) and cut it to just under 2' x 5' to make two ~2' x ~5' panels 3) I'll attach the 12" sound panels to the Luan with some construction adhesive. I don't rely on that to hold based on what a lot of you have said and what I read on the web. Hence...#4. 4) I will additionally secure the sound panels to the Luan with plastic rivets. Ones I have ordered are: -->THESE RIVETS!<--5) some ~0.5" foam blocks will adhere to the back side of the Luan, and each panel will be hung with some heavy duty picture frame mounts. I'll post pix as the project progresses. Each panel will be mounted adjacent the edges of the TV and be mostly aesthetic, but will also help a little with sound reflections near/behind the new TV. (And recall - no advice on how to fill holes. Otherwise...bring on the drones...) Mark

Just a thought... With some tempura paint, you could add any picture, logo, or pattern you fancied across the multiple sound panels without changing their acoustic properties much. I know folks who have done it, and it was awesome. (filled holes too!) sorry - I couldn't resist!

And the TV would be in front of the tempura. The droid is on the way...I do have your address, you know... Mark

If the TV will be in front, I'm not sure why you'd want absorbers back there at all. If you do feel that they're desirable, just get some egg-crate foam & put it up (if it won't be visible anyway).

I'm with Boom - I say you fix the hole first, then cover it second. Maybe cover the cover to be extra sure. Btw, there's some good youtube vids out there on drywall patching if you want to check them out..

Luan can curl fairly easily if something is done to only one side. Just a thought, but you may want to thin coat anything on both sides, sealer, primer, paint, whatever, but must be done to both sides quickly so it doesn't "take shape".
Let's see, . . . what else . . . (no, he said he'd send drones - . . . - . . . sooooo, . . ). I guess that's it.

It's not too large, but he just wants to be safe. Here's a pic from the other thread:

A similar thread exists on Reddit where a member has been listening to all the audio gurus. In the end he posted a picture of his application from what he's learned. I'll just share his picture here for inspiration. From an artistic perspective I think he's genius: I'm sure w/ some minor modification his idea might work out for covering a hole in the wall. Best of luck!

By the way, here's the system back together with 1 notable exception. My XMC-1 is gone, and the XMC-2 should be here Tuesday - as long as the shipment goes according to the tracking. Note: The side lights are normally down low, so it's typically a lot darker when I have the TV on. But, I wanted to show the whole system. Mark

Would you rather have aesthetics or excellent sound?

That's exactly the angle it is supposed to be. Would you rather have aesthetics or excellent sound? I guess I'll have to keep saying to myself: Form follows function, Form follows function, Form follows function, Form follows function, . . . . I think I'm ok now. Thanks for the support. This actually brings up an experience I had where something made a big difference even though it was tiny. Singing Bowls A friend in Newport Beach frequented a little audio shop on the PCH with great stuff inside. We got a great demonstration of Analog vs Digital, and Singing Bowls vs none. I'll skip the first and go straight to the Singing Bowls. Bottom line, they change the sound field. There were tiny metal cups mounted on wooden bases. Maybe 2" diameter for each bowl left and right of MLP on the walls about 5' high. Another one a slightly different size was on the back wall behind us, and a couple left and right of the turntable on the front wall, and the last one - a little bigger - on the floor in the middle, right in front of the amps. We listened to a female vocalist on vinyl and digital and it was a beautiful soundstage both ways. Then the owner picked up the front middle cup from the floor and the soundfield changed dramatically, which left me looking around for what else might have changed that I didn't see, but the only item moved was that little cup on the floor. He saw my reaction. I was flabbergasted! Afterwards, I tried to make sense of which I liked better and concluded that I liked both, with cups and without cups. They're just different. So, little things "can" alter the experience. May the crookedness continue.
