You’ve heard the story of the wealthy having “old money”? This is my version, its just old but not much of it! LOL I’ve acquired some older money and am curious as to where to find its value if collectible. Small town and don’t know anybody that deals in it. Suggestions please. image host

Interesting, I'm curious to know how you might end up determining the value, novisnick. I mean the older bills are promissory notes backed by [at the time] the nation's gold standard. Personally I'd rather have the gold but personal desirability to a collector of bills might be worth more. Have you searched Ebay? I assume collectors may advertise there also? And, if I may the history to some increases the desirability. Important national information is sometimes conveyed through coins or promissory notes. As for the old adage the wealthy have old money I interpreted as family money going back generations. I've assumed that often short of winning the lotto that family fortunes are passed on from generation to generation.... until the black sheep casts it away in lots. I've always wondered how many generations it takes to be wealthy. That is, if previous generations worked for the goal of ensuring financial peace of mind for their children, and their children's children?

Not a huge collector but I do dabble. The first thing is how rare it is, the second is condition. Creases, folds, tears, stains, fading etc. significantly affect what a collector will pay for it; for paper money "patina" is not your friend. The first thing I would do is a quick Google search to see if they're worth anything other than the denomination on them (the time to turn them in for gold/silver passed back in 71 or 74). After that, if they're worth grading, you can have them sent out to be graded. With a solid grading from a recognized company you can then assess the value properly. I have a friend that thought he was getting a "steal" when buying a particular collectable but later found out that he over paid for it and ended up taking a good sized bath on his purchase.

If you did well in tech, you may have become wealthy overnight! Yes, investing in tech such as Zoom appeared lucrative. Then there was Johnson and Johnson [toilet paper], and certain pharmaceutical companies..... And perhaps gun and ammo companies which set records in 2020 especially after slumping in the previous 3 years as Americans felt more secure.

1953? That doesn't sound too old. Probably not worth anything. Even a piece of coal is worth something Garbulky. Just need to know how hard to squeeze the coal until it becomes a diamond in the eye of the beholder. I think the bills have already proved their worth as I've been reflecting on the history behind them. No longer backed by a national gold standard I recall the controversy when the country was losing its credit rating [not long ago].... A promissory note only has value when the promise attached is credible. I mean anything can be a promissory note. Someone could pass you a piece of paper, a bill or debt for x amount. I assume if such piece of paper, bill, or debt is really worth x amount then one may accept the paper for face value and resubmit it for payment in full? That is, if the actual attached promise is excluded. Take for example the tremendous debt our nation is in at the moment. Too much for one generation to pay off. So the "idea" that future generations will be paying the debt off is used .... such is called credit. The "idea" that future generations will pay the debt opened the door to further extensions of credit. Mind as well start stamping birth certificates w/ bank seals on the promise that such and such citizen contribute x amount in taxes over a lifetime. We <-- the People's representatives are banking on our children, our children's children, and their children. Welcome to the new slavery, Shim

Between 1000.00 and 2000.00. numerous on EBay at this moment.....(2 dollar bills) As per my previous post where a friend thought he bought at a good price but took a bath, here's a website that gives the value at about $3 in "circulated" condition. Click Me And that's what the site says it's worth, not what a shop will give you for it. If you find someone to give you max value or even overvalue, jump on it and call yourself lucky. I've been amazed at what some people on ebay pay for things. I'm amazed at some of the prices I got putting audio gear for sale on it. I think the most shocking was when I put my XDA-1 up and got about $200 after it was all said and done (fees and shipping). This was after the XDA-2 was out for a while. I just recently bought a silver dollar on ebay; there were about 100 for sale in different conditions. I got a VG proof for about $24 whereas there were several that were for sale/buy it now for as high as $150 and they were no better or even worse than the one I got. And, even $24 (plush shipping) was a bit overvalue for the coin. But I wanted it and wasn't concerned if I paid 10% over FMV.
