Type C:
Buys gear and listens to music in recordings which are capable of wringing out maximum fidelity of the gear. If recording isn't flawed and gear comes up short then off the gear and upgrade.
As an example, Stevie Ray Vaughan Tin Pan Alley
Towards the end of the track the very few seconds of the recording there are percussions which made my old system's 2 way speakers "pop". At that time I was convinced it was a recording flaw......... Not!

I was VERY happy for 2 decades with Magnepan MG-1 (original issue) Almost nothing below mayb 50hz....No sub, either. I kept my CARVER Cube until it ceased to function AND after a repair brought on by the power company having a 'glitch'. The Maggies did so much right, I was reluctant to sell for an upgrade....to MG1.6 which I have to this day. I was able to sell the MG-1s to the first guy who called for my original ask.
I've got some awful recordings. One in particular sounds like it was recorded in a Garage. And it it one of my FAVORITE listens.

Type B. I get a kick out of hearing something impressive out of gear. I want to get as close to a realistic reproduction as possible.

Type B. I get a kick out of hearing something impressive out of gear. I want to get as close to a realistic reproduction as possible. Which of course begs the question of 'what is your reference'?? I think, and it's just my opinion, that a decent grounding in what LIVE sounds like......LIVE.....can help in the long run. I'm lacking in that regard, but have heard some crazy things over the years. Baroque Organ in the ORIGNAL Cathedral. (Brugge, Belgium) Otis Day And The Knights.....live on stage! (Del Mar Fair) PDQ Bach up in LA. Even the Escondido Center for the Performing Arts.....Symphony Orchestra in recital.. I about went NUTS since the guy doing the play-by-play (whatever) could NOT pronounce Shostakovich. at all. My wife had to restrain me. 40 or more years ago I MISSED my opportunity to go to the Golden Bear, a premier West Coast Jazz Club than they tore it down and SOLD THE BRICKS. That would be about '86 or so.

This woman buys speakers and then looks for a house to fit.

Clearly, she won't be into the 'churn'. She will be buried in the boxes her KHorns came in!

I am a type J. No just kidding. I buy the map to explore the country, not the country to explore the map. Sounds silly right? Many people do the B choice. Thing is the hobby is able to work both ways though so there is no right or wrong answer. Me it has been always the music first. My music teacher told me if I am dedicated to music I need to be into the music and not become an engineer. How prophetic. I kind of walked the line and dug the gear more which explains why music playing was meh, even if I still enjoyed playing. The gear and all was always so alluring. But today, the music and more are landscape of my journey. The gear, the mere vehicle of my journey.

None of the above....we all enjoy whatever we can afford, and keep in mind, that one song you have loved forever, ever since the first time (it might have been through a crappy radio) will always sound good....

I am a music lover first. I am happy listening to music on whatever the avenue is first and foremost. I enjoy the music that much more when translated through quality gear.

Type A I guess....most of the vinyl and cd's I own I've had for many years...the components have come and gone, too many to list here. Music to me mostly stays the same, I like what I like....the gear is a never ending experiment to what end I've got no idea....mostly limited by my wallet. If I ever became rich....the multi-million dollar home or cars that can go 250 mph isn't going to be the thing.....I'd settle for an acoustically engineered / designed room with a stack of McIntosh's best gear....and a new Harley CVO Street Glide in custom root beer paint. I'd probably move to a warmer state where I can ride year round too...

My 'IF I WERE RICH' solution is the 2-house solution. Winter in a mild climate and move to a place that has nice summers for maybe about 1/2 the year. Finding a place for year-round mototcycling is difficult. while not on the list, I visited New Hampshire in the fall of 2001 , after 9-11 and met some motorcycle guys who said they were on 'the last run of the season'..... I have friends in Idaho who do the same. Winterize and park. Even here in SoCal, it can get dicey in the winter IF you get caught out in a storm. yes, it rains here, and the drivers are VERY unprepared to the point where I will skip trips just to avoid the Nuts.... My motorcycle choice? Yamaha TW200. Decidedly LOW performance, just an easy 2-wheel ride. You'd have to be nuts to go cross country on one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_TW200The ONLY motorcycle I know ridden to th North Pole.

Well, I guess i am both. I have a lot of gear (4 2-channel set ups, and 3 HT setups) and I have a lot of music - CD, LP, digital library, and streaming devices. I listen intently by setting down in the MLP position and listening for a protracted period. I look for life like sound with good spread and depth and I like most the music of my youth (I'm 9 years old).

Very true. Many of my favorite songs I listened to over and over and over as 45's on a crummy little record player and they got to be pretty scratched up. My memory of the songs is with those scratches. So if I hear a "clean" or remastered version of the same song today, it doesn't have the same meaning to me. Sure it sounds a lot better fidelity-wise, but it really isn't the "same" song as from my youth days of 45 RPM records and transistor and clock radios.

I used to be Type B because that was part of my job, but I am absolutely Type A. Enjoy the music. Get whatever gear allows you to enjoy the music. That's all that matters.

Better to have music you love played on crummy gear, than forcing yourself to listen to garbage just because it sounds good on your fancy gear.

Better to have music you love played on crummy gear, than forcing yourself to listen to garbage just because it sounds good on your fancy gear. And I will go further and say if your fancy gear only sounds good when playing certain types of garbage, then it, too, is garbage.
