The difference between what most would consider a pretty robust 600 watts and 1.2kw is only 3db.
You could get the 'equivelent' power boost by finding speakers of about 3db higher sensitivity.....at least IF you liked them as well.
You'll need 20 amp circuits for those huge MC amps, too.
Don't forget that at the 'dawn' of high end, maybe late 50s or so, the Big Box speakers, like Altec (voice of the theater) the Klipschorn, and maybe Bozak would all put you in the hospital with 10 watts or less.
Than came solid state, and around that time AR (Acoustic Research) AR speakers became very popular. I really wanted the AR3a very badly for a while. But was essentially a broke kid.
I know I'm playing fast and loose with the timeline, but you get the idea.
From carrying them if not listening to them... My first ARC dealer had big Bozaks in the main listening room.
I'm pretty much over the "big iron" amplifier days... The latest class D modules offer superior performance (lower noise, lower distortion, higher power) in nice little boxes consuming far less power and emitting far less heat than the old A/AB amplifiers even with switchin/tracking power rails (class G/H -- the Benchmark being an exception, but it is not a 1 kW amp). And, their switching power supplies put the power noise way above the audio band, instead of adding hum and noise down where I can hear it.
I cam really close to picking up Kal's old Bryston but ultimately decided to try an amp using the new NCORE modules for my heights, waiting for the amp so I can get them playing.
The long slide to smaller speaker cabinets and demand for more bass has led to a significant reduction in sensitivity for most of them (some horns excepted), but the counter is that high power amplification is cheap these days.
