Hi guys,
I would need some advice, my XPA-5, goes into safe mode, on one channel during loud scenes, which is a bummer. When there’s an explosion scene in the movie, it’s shutdowns. I have to listen at lower volume. I wasn’t playing at deafening volume. Around 25 on a Marantz. It goes ok when I listen at 30.
The 2nd led from the left lights up. How can I resolve this?
Thank you.

Curious, What speaker is connected to that channel? As a suggestion swap another speaker onto the problem channel and see if the same fault happens on that channel. That way you'll isolate the amp from the speaker and wiring.

I had this for months... I thought I had checked and rechecked but in the end it turned out to be a cable short.
I was using 4mm banana plugs on the speaker output cables but they were "premium" ones with an outer casing made of metal (QED Airloc).
Something else at the back of my amp was running over the top of them and causing a short that only revealed itself with explosions, loud music etc.
There is something to be said for those cheap red and black plastic banana plugs!

You CAN'T let the speaker wires touch...
But, with some metal connectors, there is a layer of paint or anodize that makes a sort of insulation. They may not short if simply brushing against each other - but may do so if you apply more pressure... And they may not short if the paint or anodize is perfect... but then may short if it gets scratched or scuffed...
Or if something metal touches both at once... And, if the short is very weak, it may only be a problem when the signal level itself is very high (when the sound is loud).
The answer is still to REMOVE OR AVOID THE SHORT.
If you have banana plugs with metal shells then DON'T LET THEM TOUCH... And don't let anything that is metal (or some other conductor) touch them...
You could avoid this by.... - being careful to make sure there is plenty of clearance - replacing them with banana plugs with plastic shells - putting some sort of insulating tape or insulating sleeve around them (like heat shrink tubing or yellow kapton tape)

How did you fix the cable short for loud explosions? Did you change the cable? Or use banana plugs? I had the same issue with my surround speaker wires where the run was so long I spliced two wires together. At that point, I had wires touch - and this caused the the amp to go into safe mode when the volume got too loud. So simple fix - once i understood the cause.

I had a similar problem with a UPA-7 amp many years ago. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the amp, it was the speaker wires. At the time I was using bare wire connections. I stripped the ends and re connected all of them, and no problems after. Now I use premium banana plugs on my HT AVR, and spade connectors on the two channel gear.
What happened is the old copper wire started corroding. As it does that it leaves a black deposit on whatever it's in touch with. The insides of your banana plugs may be doing the same. Dis-similar metals often don't like touching each other.

Is better use banana plugs at the amp & spades at the speaker terminals. I’m using Axiom M80 speakers.

I bought banana plugs & spades. I fixed them to the speaker cables. Cleared some space. It works fine now. I cranked up the volume on ‘Ready Player One’ it didn’t go into safe mode at race scene. Every explosion or crash, was loud and powerful. It was great..
Thanks everyone for their inputs.
