Good morning all, UMC-1 has been in storage for a while. Took it out this morning and went to hook it up to my sony blu ray player and I'm not getting any sound (2.1 setup) Physical Setup- Power plugged in =)
- HDMI running from bluray to Emotiva HDMI 1
- HDMI running from Emo out to TV HDMI in
- RCAs running from Emotiva FL & FR to Emotiva XPA-5 --> speakers
- Sub hooked up to to balanced out
Status: - Audio and video set to HDMI 1
- Can see video on TV
UMC screen reads: direct no audio I thought I'd try to update the firmware on my windows 10 machine, but I cannot get the "Amplifier Firmware Upgrade" app to "see" the UMC-1 - the red x never goes away. Tried the same setup running from my firestick instead of the bluray, still have video and no audio. Tried having just the sound from the TV go from RCA out to any of the inputs on the UMC-1 and couldn't get audio to play through (so it doesn't seem to be just a HDMI issue). Can anyone help?

Make sure your speakers are turned on in the speaker setup menu. The message you see indicates the mode is "Direct." Try changing the mode from the main menu or by using the remote control. In case you have lost it, here's the owners manual Attachment Deleted

I feel stupid, but don't know what having the speakers turned on means! I've ensured they are on. Changed mode to stereo, still with no audio output either from TV or from the bluray player. Thanks for the manual - I'm reviewing it.
Attempted running test tones - no sound either. Has my 'sound board' gone bad?

I believe there is a way to reset to factory default should that need arise on the UMC-1. If all else fails and you are not even getting test tones which is not necessarily bad news, but maybe of concern. There maybe a corruption in the audio translation possibly. It has been a while for me on the UMC-1. It is interesting you said audio was direct and no audio. So it looks like it is not picking up the PCM stream from you source maybe. I would hope that audio formats come such as "Stereo" or Dolby Digital or PLii at least. So after all is said and done I would do a load default and start from scratch and see if this clears up the audio issue. Hopefully there is nothing malfunctioning on the UMC-1.

Well I found a windows 7 computer and was able to upgrade to the latest firmware. I am able to get sound out only when selecting ext 7.1 in. (I don't know if this is a change from before flashing, I didn't attempt this input before). On other settings (HDMI or cable etc) I get the message "no audio" from the UMC-1.
Any other thoughts? My hope remains to get it working but if I can't I'll try to sell on ebay if someone can use it for parts.
Thanks all, -Josh

Did you try other inputs - HDMI, optical, and analog?
My 11-year old UMC still works great but I do use it almost daily.

With the UMC you had to configure the inputs that you want to use. For any given input you had to select what audio and video feeds you wanted to use with it. Have you done that? At least that's the way I remember it.

Yes, thank you for asking. Set input to DVD, with defined inputs for DVD audio and video both as HDMI 1. Output HDMI to TV shows video no problem, but the UMC-1 says "No Audio".
I opened the UMC-1 up and found minuscule amounts of white residue on the bottom of some components on the HDMI board. I may clean it off with some 99% isopropyl alcohol and see if that does anything. I saw a post where someone mentioned the brown glue under some diodes becoming conductive and found the brown glue but it is not conductive. Wish I knew my way around electronics more =)

I bought a nice new HDMI cable just to see, but as soon as the UMC-1 boots on it just says "No Audio". I tried HDMI input 5 as well since I hadn't done that before.

I certainly would be concerned. You're only getting sound passed through when you bypass the internal workings of the unit, and use it as a volume knob.
Hopefully you just have some dirty connections. Unplug it and re-seat any connectors you can find. If you have any electrical contact cleaner, that would be even better.
After that, you may have a failure of one of the power supply voltages.
Good luck.
