I see a LOT of recommendations to use an external amp on L/C/R speakers. Let the receiver with its probably mediocre PS handle the rest.
In my wanderings thru various stores, I note that HT receivers run HOT.
The question is? Do you notice your receiver running cooler when relieved of the front 3 channels AND does the gear last longer?
Some of that stuff in stores was 'fry an egg' hot....And yes, before THAT comment comes in, an external fan-cooler would be nice,
if it is done right.....doesnt' trap hot air and is properly vented to the room....

“I see a LOT of recommendations to use an external amp on L/C/R speakers. If your running a home theater system that gets that HOT delivering the goods…..going for separate amplification for three channels is a pointless solution for cooling things off. An ATMOS receiver is given TOO MUCH to “think” about…..small wonder they get too hot. Bill

It's been a while, but EVERY time I would visit a place selling HT recievers, the ones that were on, were HOT......Period. I suspect under-cooled output devices.
And the rest eats plenty of power, too.
Most or many, anyway, can't afford a processor. And than in 2 years THAT'S obsolete, too. Sorry......HT is like owning a boat, which has been described (by owners) as a hole in
the water into which you poir money...

Boating is an incredibly broad topic and “expensive” is a relative term. You can have the joy of a lifetime for peanuts or you can break the bank and be miserable. If you grew up with it as I did and you can SWIM and THINK at the same time, you will budget the joy in a manner that works for you. I’ve done “ High Fidelity” home theater 🎭 since 2001. Never will I return to sitting between 2 speakers thinking that is the “cats ass”. My XMC1/Sunfire combo runs cool as a cucumber 🥒 always….even at the ear bleed level, that amp. Hardly gets any warmer than in standby. 20 years and counting without even a hint that anything’s up! Bill

I have a 10 year old Denon 4311 receiver. Its internal amps are "turned off" and I'm running powered Emotiva monitor speakers. Yes, it still runs quite warm, which implies to me that the internal amps aren't really powered down.

Neighbor buy races LIDOs. Haven't been made in 25 or 30 years. ALL are old and even the 'new' ones need a lot of sweat equity. So you CAN do it on the fly. But? To have something capable of sailing to Catalina from any of the coastal cities? Be prepared. Be equipped and KNOW what you are doing. My brother owned a 'Down Easter' sail boat. 38' I think? ENDLESS problems. Even the engine replacement was botched. And resulted in a fire which TOTAL Lossed the boat. Getting to the WEST coast from the East was epic and Expensive. Yard Fees to reassemble (step the mast and connect ALL the electronics) was in the thousands. Fact is? A pre--pro is an expensive but admittedly better solution to the HT dilemma. HT receivers are mostly awful. Mediocre sound for music (nobody knows what a movie sounds like) while being problematic for repair IF more than 3 or 4 years old....Besides which? New 'tech' has rendered that 700$ receiver Obsolete. As an exercise? Price ANYTHING for a boat. Epoxy / WestSystem for repairs? Hardware? Electronics? (some handhelds are waterproof AND reasonable, though) Here in SoCal if you want a slip for a boat? Put your hat in the ring 5 to 9 years BEFORE you need it. Pay every year a fee to keep you name on the list. Check out the lumber guys for Marine Grade EXTERIOR / Void Free Ply Wood. Cheapest boat I ever owned? My Cobra Tourer. 15' of Sit On Kayak. Rudder included! Life jacket cost about 45$. Rest included. Goes on TOP of the 'Element'......Don't need a CA sticker. Bullet proof TupperWare Construction. So all I need to pay for is parking near the 'put in'.......Good Exercise, too.
