I need some advice from someone familiar with the Denon Heos system and how it is best used. I think my bro-in-law good screwed by the builder/sound system contractor in his new house, but i want to be sure i understand the system uses before i say anything.

So does it make sense to use several Heos Amps to power ceiling speakers? They have 5 zones and they were sold one amp for each pair, but that looks like overkill to me to power (not that great imo) ceiling speaks?

They have 4 amps and one Marantz receiver.

So does it make sense to use several Heos Amps to power ceiling speakers? They have 5 zones and they were sold one amp for each pair, but that looks like overkill to me to power (not that great imo) ceiling speaks? Each HEOS amp is only two channels. So if you want 5 separate zones that you can control independently you need the four amps and the main AVR. Now we can debate the merits of a $500 amp for an inexpensive set of speakers, but overall it’s a simple solution for whole home audio that can easily be controlled from an app on your phone. Since the amps are wireless there was some cost savings from not having a central processor with amps that had to run speaker cable throughout the home. Plus if he ever adds another set of speakers (say outdoor etc), it’s simple to just add another amp to the system.

Ok, that’s fair. I just wanted to be sure the installer wasn’t up selling un-needed equipment for they’re application. Of course, I would encourage them to get better wall mount or inwall speakers... thanks!

One could argue the use of a HEOS amp over one of the low end AVR's with HEOS support based on cost. All depends on what the requirements were. You can hide the AMP but have to use an app to control it where the AVR would give local controls and still be controllable via the app.

Thanks everyone for the input! I think he got what he wanted, I just don’t think they’re worth the expense for the speakers he selected. But he’s not really into SQ, just convenience.
