So what do you think of McIntosh's statement (from their Instagram account) about why meters are useful? That without meters there is no way to know if you've reached or exceeded the power limits of your system?

If I were to buy a Mac amp again (and Iāve owned them in the past), I would enjoy both the utility of the meter, and the looks ā so they would factor in my decision to buy. As for the statement, Iād say you need some sort of a metering or measuring device to āknowā when youāve reached the limit. Iāve seen amps that just had a single āPeakā or āClippingā LED, which would also tell you, as would a row of LEDs that tell you various powers. So Iād disagree with the āwithout metersā part, there are other metering devices besides meters. Iād also say none of them are perfect, so āknowā is a slippery term.

They did away with the meter in the latest version of my favorite amplifier. Thatās OKā¦. I canāt look when Iām busy getting blown out of my chair from the power it delivers.

Meters belong on recording or mixing devices. That is all.

I am all for the Meters - gives you a ball park on the level of power being used and they look awesome as well. Waiting to see what the DR1 Gen4 brings as well as looking at the McIntosh MC462 for power plant replacements

In my house with the shared walls, I have XPA-1 gen 2 and I don't have to know if I've exceeded the power limits simply because there's no way I can. That's the advantage of amp horsepower!

Still kick myself for not scoring the XPA-1 Gen2s

I've owned a McIntosh amp and loved the meters. The look is very nice and the meters are fun to watch. However, I'm pretty sure their usefulness is minimal. With my current system I could not possibly over drive the amps without destroying the ribbon tweeters as well as my hearing.

My ears have always been the determining factor as to whether or not my amps were headed into uncharted territoryā¦..not the meters but they are pretty to look at! I once had bridged amps with LED meters. Those were more responsive than the old needle, and beautifully visible at night, no matter where you were in the room. Iāve never seen my latest one move (downtracking converter) on the Sunfire. Theoretically, when you approach the amplifiers limits, the thing starts dropping. At 2000 watts, I canāt see that happening.

Agreed - I am more pro the LED Meters and still like those in the Gen2s rather then the Needles Meters

I recall the day my Phase Linear 400 became āToastā. The big bright VU meters flew over to MAXā¦.and stayed thereā¦..never to return!
